Monthly Board Update

Dallas ISD | District 2

September 2024

Greetings, District 2!

I hope you were able to enjoy our beautiful September weather as we cruise into fall! Please find this month’s newsletter below, and don’t forget to check out the numerous upcoming October events listed at the bottom.

Dallas ISD District 2 Monthly Updates:

WE WANT YOUR INPUT: As a board, one of our most important jobs is to set our student outcome goals and constraints which drive the district’s work and accountability. In October we will be conducting several community listening meetings, a schedule of which can be found here. We are seeking broad input across stakeholders to identify community priorities and concerns, which will be paired with a district-prepared analysis of highest needs to help us set future goals, commencing in the 2025-2026 school year. Don’t worry if you can’t make one of the meetings, as we are also gathering feedback via this survey, open for the next six weeks. Please weigh in on what’s important to you!

Math People: Dallas ISD’s Townview School of Science and Engineering teacher Lance Barasch recently published an article about nurturing our next generation of “math people”.  If you are curious about Dallas ISD’s math curriculum and parent resources, click here to learn more.

Resourceful: Dallas ISD’s first of four planned resource centers in Southern Dallas operates to help improve student outcomes. Investment helps provide access to nutritious food, mental health counseling and skill-building workshops for our families in the areas of greatest need.

September Board Meeting Debrief:

This month, Dallas ISD had its regular board briefing and meeting. I’ve chosen to highlight a few items below:

  • Student Outcome Goals Progress Report: Speaking of student outcome goals, interim progress toward our current goals was discussed in our briefing. Consistent with national and state trends, the district saw declines in state assessment (STAAR) scores across many subjects, notably in third grade reading and math. Increases were seen in Algebra 1, Biology, English II and US History. Strategic adjustments that have been made by the district include the creation of elementary math academies, individual goal setting for students, continued implementation and customization of high-quality instructional materials, and targeted professional development.
  • Professional Learning Updates: Meeting student outcome goals depends on quality instruction. To that end, more than 4,000 Dallas ISD teachers participated in a variety of summer professional development sessions to hone their craft. Check out this video for more about Dallas ISD’s educator summer learning.

Dallas ISD Bond Construction Update:

Across the district, campus infrastructure upgrades funded by the proceeds from the 2020 Bond continue, details of which can be found on the Bond 2020 dashboard.

As always, please reach out to me if you have thoughts, ideas, questions, concerns, or simply want to say hello!

Best,

Sarah Weinberg
