Greetings, District 2!
I hope you were able to enjoy the State Fair this October and the cooler weather! It’s been a busy October for Dallas ISD. Thank you for letting me share some highlights with you below.
Dallas ISD District 2 Monthly Updates:
Dallas ISD’s newly constructed Career Institute North is centrally located at the former Walnut Hill Elementary School and provides career training and resources for our students from nearby high schools, including Hillcrest, Conrad, North Dallas, Thomas Jefferson and WT White. Check out the seventeen different workforce training opportunities that are currently offered!
The Dallas Morning News recently highlighted a powerful new Dallas ISD policy which aims to close the access gap for students in terms of honors math courses. This policy has shown so much promise that it has now become a statewide law via a bipartisan bill passed in the last state legislative session.
Dallas ISD staff safe lives: Israel Alfaro and Raquel Radford Baker were quick thinking heroes when they jumped in to save lives. We are thankful to have them in our district!
D2 Bond Construction Updates: Campus infrastructure upgrades funded by the proceeds from the 2020 Bond continue across the district. Dallas ISD has a dedicated 2020 Bond website chock full of detailed information!
October Board Meeting Debrief: This month, Dallas ISD had its regular board briefing and meeting. I’ve chosen to highlight the most important item below:
- Academic Achievement Update: This month, our board monitored progress toward our goals relating to (1) overall student achievement and (2) middle school achievement. For overall student achievement, Dallas ISD grew by two points over last year to 44%, while closing achievement gaps. This is just shy of our goals and expectations, but we look forward to seeing this close over the next year. Middle school achievement – which has been a focus area for Dallas ISD – grew 3 points to 42%, meeting our rigorous goal this year, while also closing achievement gaps. There is still a long way to go, but we’re moving in the right direction in improving student outcomes.
-
Dallas ISD Adopts Resolution Opting Out of Chaplains: This year, the Texas legislature passed a law requiring all school systems in Texas to adopt a resolution stating whether they will employ, or accept as volunteers, chaplains in their school systems. This month, the Dallas ISD school board unanimously adopted a resolution opting out of adding this position in our schools.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have thoughts, ideas, questions, concerns, or simply want to say hello!
Best,
Sarah Weinberg
