Weaverville Police Department Holiday Safety Message

As the holiday season approaches, it’s essential to prioritize the security of your homes and vehicles. Here are some helpful tips to keep your belongings safe:

Home Security Tips:

  1. Lock Up: Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, even if you’re just stepping out for a short time. Unfortunately, criminals pay close attention to the comings and goings of their potential victims. Act accordingly, don’t become a victim.
  2. Install Outdoor Lighting: Use motion-activated lights around your home to deter potential intruders. There are several cost-effective choices at any of our local home improvement stores to choose from.
  3. Don’t Advertise Gifts: Avoid placing visible gifts under the tree where they can be seen from outside. Use curtains or blinds to cover windows. This almost feels counter to tradition. Just remember that criminals do not stop doing criminal activities because of the tradition of the holidays! Quite the opposite actually!
  4. Maintain Your Property: Security through environmental design is easy on the wallet and effective. Trim hedges and shrubs that could provide cover for burglars. Keep your property well-lit and maintained. Rose and holly bushes are beautiful and great security options.
  5. Use Timers for Lights: Set timers for indoor and outdoor lights to create the illusion that someone is home. Leaving your lights on 24/7 can be a signal to criminals that you are not home. Timers can be put on outlets with TVs as well.
  6. Neighborhood Watch: Connect with neighbors to keep an eye on each other’s homes during the holidays. This is good practice any time of the year. As we have just seen with Hurricane Helene, having a relationship with your neighbors is a great asset to have.

Car Security Tips:

  1. Lock Your Doors: Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in your driveway. The vast majority of thefts from vehicles and thefts of vehicles themselves are due to unlocked cars with keys in them. Weaverville is a safe area, but we are not immune to crime!
  2. Hide Valuables: Store items out of sight in the trunk or glove compartment. Avoid leaving bags or packages in plain view. When you arrive home, take the valuables out of the car. You may have to get inventive hiding the gifts in the house, but the car should not be on the list of hiding places.
  3. Park Wisely: Choose well-lit, busy areas to park. If possible, use secure parking facilities. Also, be aware of your surroundings! Look for people that seem to be lurking around vehicles. Sometimes criminals linger in parking lots looking for unlocked or exposed valuables. Watch for people kneeling down next to a car, they may be tying their shoes, they may be up to no good!
  4. Use a Car Alarm: If your vehicle is equipped with an alarm system, ensure it’s activated. Consider installing one if it’s not. Most modern cars have an alarm system, but your doors must be locked to activate it.

General Safety Tips:

  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice anything unusual in your neighborhood or parking area, report it to local authorities. The police department relies on our citizens as force multipliers. Please report suspicious activity to the Weaverville Police Department when you see it.        (828) 645-5700

By taking these simple precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for you and your loved ones.

Stay safe, stay vigilant, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
