A Message from Weaverville's Police Department:

new_years_fireworks.jpg

The holidays! Am I right ... Are you ready for the New Year? Whether it is resolutions to lose weight, spend less money, or spend more time with family, we all try to approach the new year with renewed optimism and hope for a better future. Of course, ringing in the new year takes on many forms and traditions… Be it a family meal, a long-anticipated party to attend, changing out the smoke detector batteries, or even something as mundane as taking down the decorations of previous holidays. One tradition that cannot be overlooked is a good celebratory fireworks show. Fireworks have been a part of ringing in the New Year since at least the seventh century AD and are loved by young and old alike. While they can be a lot of fun, they can lead to trouble. As many of us are aware, we are experiencing a very dry season, and fire is of special concern now.

North Carolina has many laws concerning pyrotechnics (i.e., fireworks), specifically ones that leave the ground. We will not bore you with the details of the law, but North Carolina General Statute Chapter 14 Article 54 says that if it leaves the ground, you should not be using it. Additionally, the town has ordinances restricting firearms and explosives (Chapter 9 of Town of Weaverville Ordinances) that folks need to remember when celebrating.

To sum the laws and ordinances up, be a good neighbor by being considerate of others and not accidentally setting their property on fire or driving them crazy with explosions/gunfire late into the night. Besides, the professionals always put on a great show, and you get to leave the show with the same number of fingers you started it with. We at the Weaverville Police Department want to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe new year.

Outdoor Fire Safety:

Outdoor fire safety starts with obeying local burn bans and fire restrictions. It is always a good idea to keep your home as fireproof as possible by cleaning up around your house to make a defensible space from wildfire through activities such as mowing the lawn, removing debris from the roof and gutters, clearing a five-foot perimeter around your home free of flammable materials, as well as limbing trees and shrubs.

Town of Weaverville-Ivy River Water Treatment Plant “Gold Star”

Public Works Dept. Ivy River Water Treatment Plant “Gold Star”

In October 2023 the Town of Weaverville-Ivy River Water Treatment Plant was awarded the 2022 AWOP award for the 14th consecutive year.

The N.C. Division of Water Resources has honored 72 water treatment plants for surpassing federal and state drinking water standards in 2022. The division’s Public Water Supply Section awarded the facilities the prestigious N.C. Area Wide Optimization Award, which is part of a state effort to enhance the performance of existing surface water treatment facilities.

For 2022, the state recognized 15 facilities with the “Gold Star” honor, which is an award for systems that have received the N.C. Area Wide Optimization Award for 10 or more consecutive years.

Awards are given each year to water systems that demonstrate outstanding turbidity removal, a key test of drinking water quality. Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness or haziness of water caused by individual particles that can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Microbes are microscopic particles that occur naturally but can include harmful bacteria and viruses. While all drinking water systems must meet strict state and federal drinking water standards, these systems met performance goals that are significantly more stringent than state and federal standards. In 2022, over 3 million North Carolina residents were served by these award-winning plants.

The Town of Weaverville's Veterans Day Observance

Lieutenant Colonel David Thorneloe

The Town's Veterans Day observance was well attended as our community honored our men and women who serve our Country be they retired, active, or reserves. The honorable Lieutenant Colonel David Thorneloe was the keynote speaker and provided his insights and expertise as he had served from the front lines of Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne Division and as peacekeeper in Sinai, Egypt.

An ovation and thank you to Veterans, active, retired, or in reserves.

Weaverville Public Works Department is always ready to help, naturally our appreciation goes to those who also served.

Lake Louise Playground & Recreation Complex Projects Update

Lake Louise Playground update:

The work on the playground is nearing completion, with the equipment installed and the fall protection ground layer being installed by the end of November. The fall protection layer cannot be used for 48 hours after completion. Staff from the Public Works Department are installing sod in the disturbed area surrounding the playground and will be blocked off from traffic through the first weekend in December so the playground should be open to the public on Saturday, December 2. Visitors are asked to stay on the actual playground equipment and green safety layer and avoid using any area blocked by orange fencing.

Recreation Complex update:

Work is progressing on the town’s new Recreational Complex. The pickleball and basketball courts are paved, fence posts are installed and anchored in concrete, all concrete sidewalks and curbs are complete, the storm drainage system is installed, and all grading is complete. Due to wet and cold weather and holiday delays from Thanksgiving week, the coatings on the courts have been delayed until spring. However, temporary striping will be placed on the courts to allow for play until the coatings are painted.

Meanwhile, within the next 2-3 weeks, paving and striping of the parking lot should be finished, the basketball unit will be installed, the pickleball nets and fencing will be constructed, the benches and racquet holders will be installed by Public Works staff, the street lights matching those at the Community Center will be installed by Duke Power, and the final mulching and landscaping will be finished. Opening of the courts will be announced on the town’s social media platform and by signage at the complex.

Save the Date for Special Event- Elfs Invade Weaverville on December 17th

Holiday fun for the whole family abounds in December with the Artisan Players and the DreamWeaver Kids. Their holiday showcase is on December 17th at 3:00 PM in the Albert Weaver Room at the Community Center.

·      The Artisan Players will present 'HEAD ELF'.  Santa has lost his head elf and needs a replacement. Some very funny characters seek the position.

·      The DreamWeaver Kids have created an original play based on a theatre class exercise. The play is called 'SANTA and the OBNOXIOUS ELF'.  Come check out Fred Obnoxious who tends to disrupt Santa's workshop on a daily basis. You will love what our local kids have created! Please contact your Instructor and/or Program Champions should you have any questions or concerns. Contact information can be found on the WCCHL Schedule spreadsheet at the bottom of this Blog, and on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/WCCHL.

A Special Note of Recognition & Appreciation:

The Holiday Parade Staff and Parade Committee together with the Mayor and Town Council have selected WCCHL's founder, Tom Balestrieri as Grand Marshal for the 2023 Holiday Parade.

Finally, as we bring another calendar year to a close, our Board would be remiss if we did not once again extend a personal 'Thank You' to our incredible volunteers. Without their generous spirit of volunteerism and unique skillsets, none of this exceptional programming would be possible. Our volunteers are amazing, so please reach out to thank them when you have an opportunity. As always, should you have any questions about our WCCHL sponsored programming don’t hesitate to contact us.

Respectfully,

Thomas M. Balestrieri, Board Chairperson
