Red Cross Blood Donor Drive- Good things happen when you give!

Please participate if you are able on Thursday, August 3rd at the American Red Cross Blood Drive. From 10:00 - 3:00, held at the Town of Weaverville Community Center.

Contact the Town’s Recreation Coordinator with any questions at: sstovall@weavervillenc.org or (828) 658-5816.

Summer has finally arrived and with a bang! It has been hot and humid. You might think it would be nice to take your dog down to Lake Louise, remove their leash, and let them dive in for a cool, refreshing plunge. HOWEVER, that behavior is prohibited despite how much your four-legged friend may like it. Weaverville ordinance 4-80(c) states, "It shall be unlawful for any owner/custodian or any other person having possession, charge, custody or control of any dog to take the dog into or allow the dog to enter any public park without the dog being at all times under the restraint of a leash." That includes even the best-trained dog, the oldest dog, the youngest dog, and yes, the cutest dog. A violation of this ordinance could cost $250 in fines (That’s a lot of dog treats!) Please be respectful of others so everyone can enjoy their time at our beautiful lake. There are certainly safer (and cheaper) ways to help your pet beat the heat!

As a reminder, you can always call 255-5555 at any time to meet or speak with a Weaverville Police Officer. We’d be happy to help!

Friday, August 11th:  Book Preview, Reading, and More… (Rescheduled)

The World Beyond the Redbud Tree, by Madison C. Brightwell at 7:00-8:30 PM. Madison C. Brightwell (a Weaverville resident) will read from and discuss her new novel - The World Beyond the Redbud Tree. This novel was written by Brightwell during the COVID pandemic as a response to what she saw as a world that needed some healing and hope. The novel is set partly right here in Weaverville, and partly in a fantasy parallel universe, in which our teenage heroine, Charli, discovers a Utopian world where different and better choices were made - a world in which the native peoples were embraced by the white colonists and not destroyed by them, which created a harmonious and peaceful society. Madison hopes to inspire readers of the book to think about how we can all contribute to making the world a better place. Free admission. This event will feature…

o  An interview with the author,

o  Q&A with the audience,

o  A performance of an extract from the book by local actors, and

o  A book signing by the author at the end of the evening.

Review: "Brightwell's storytelling is vivid and rich and her writing compelling.  The World Beyond the Redbud Tree is a fascinatingly adventurous and original examination of life, grief, forgiveness, and compassion.  It's unlike anything I've read before: captivating, touching, gently magical and ultimately uplifting."—

Penny Haw, author of The Wilderness Between Us and The Invincible Miss Cust

If you want to have Madison sign your copy of her book after her presentation, it is available through Amazon.com in both hardcopy and paperback. Publisher ‏ : ‎ Koehler Books (April 11, 2023) / ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1646639375 / ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1646639373. For more information contact Madison Brightwell at: me@madisonbrightwell.com.

Friday, September 1st: Free Musical Concert from 7:00-8:30 PM.  The musical stylings of Love Bubble featuring Hank Bones, Paula Hanke, and Peggy Ratusz will bring an evening filled with bluesy standards and original works for a harmony-driven, romping good time. You can listen to tracks from their 2019 debut record Love Revolution at https://lovebubble.bandcamp.com/. Or watch their latest video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1SaTsxdjic. Love Bubble’s mission has always been to write nothing but positive songs about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness; they leave the sad songs to the endless array of talented singer songwriters across the globe. They are firmly planted in positivity and love.  Featuring songs from their sophomore record release Dream Big, expect more love, more bubble, and genius lyrics written by these talented veterans of the WNC music scene for decades. From storytelling to prose and poetry, each of Dream Big’s 12 tracks is rich in arrangement, instrumentation, melody, rhyme, and rhythm. Suitable for the whole family.  Bring your family and friends for what’s assured to be a memorable evening of song and good vibes. Special Event Sponsor for this concert is Peterson Insurance Group, Inc. of Weaverville… much appreciated!

Schreiber is planning an all-female cast that will present The Sweet Delilah Swim Club (originally called The Dixie Swim Club).  Our local actors showed up in droves for the July auditions so Janice has decided to produce two performances showcasing two separate and talented casts who will perform on the respective dates noted above. A late afternoon matinee performance (3:00-4:30 PM) sounds like a great opportunity for a show and an early dinner in Weaverville while the Saturday performance would be a great time to make reservations for an early dinner to meet Swim Club’s curtain time of 7:00PM. What a great way to support our local eateries, breweries, and the Community Center as well. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Public Service Event: Are You BearWise? Tuesday, September 19th at 7:30 pm.

Want to know more about how to safely coexist with black bears in North Carolina?  Cynthia Ward, Owner/Broker of Weaverville Realty is co-hosting this Bear-Awareness lecture featuring Ashley Hobbs, a bear biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. We are all too aware of the continuing issues that our native Black Bears present in our neighborhoods as was recently covered in a recent MountainXpress article. Ashley Hobbs will discuss the natural history of black bears in western North Carolina and how you can use that information to safely coexist with these North Carolina treasures. Among the topics covered will be:

• Bear behavior and biology in North Carolina.

• The BearWise initiative, which provides ways to prevent conflicts, provides resources to resolve problems, and encourages community initiatives to keep bears wild.

• What to do in a bear encounter.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. For more information, contact Ashley Hobbs at: ashley.hobbs@ncwildlife.org. Or for more tips on how to coexist with bears visit: bearwise.org.

What you missed since our last Blog posting…

On Sunday, July 23rd, the matinee theatrical production of Tales from the MOB (Mothers of the Brides ) played to a large and enthusiastic crowd. Written by Doreen Blue with “Pass the Hat Productions”, this delightful look at how mothers of the bride cope and interfere with their daughters’ wedding plans. There were no less than 20 individual monologues from a collection of zany women describing their experiences in anticipation of “the big day”. Special thanks to Cappy Tosetti and Doreen Blue for their expert leadership in bringing this unique production to our Weaverville stage. For this performance, the Director and Cast decided to donate all proceeds to a local charity: The Hope Chest for Women. This not-for-profit charity is dedicated to financially assisting women with breast cancer who live in Western North Carolina. Once again, the generosity of our attendees was superb, raising over $300.00 for this local charity. Well Done, ladies!

At the Café: On Sunday, July 9th, four excerpts from the new musical production At the Café received rave reviews from the enthusiastic crowd who came to the Weaverville Community Center for this unique and emotionally stirring event. The script and lyrics were written by local playwright Marcy Gallagher and the musical score was written by Sarah Kors (who graced our stage in 2022 as one half of Tumo Kors).

At the Café will have its grand premier at Asheville’s Tina McGuire Theater at the Wortham Center, August 18,19, 20, 25, 26, & 27.  For more information contact Marcy Gallagher at: marcygallagher222@gmail.com. For tickets, contact the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts Box Office at 828-257-4530 / boxoffice@worthamarts.org.

Two items from the WCCHL Board Chairman

One: I don’t usually ask for help as our WCCHL operating goals have always sought to live under the radar. But, in the next couple of weeks, I will be missing from the Community Center as my lovely bride will be home recovering from a knee replacement. While I know all will be well at home, I won’t be attending the August 3rd and August 11th Special Events. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help out by stepping up to be the official “chair man” - setting up and returning chairs before and after these two events, please contact me via email at wcchl@weavervillenc.org.

Two: Our Board members hear repeatedly from our local Weaverville neighbors that they are not aware of the many activities that take place for FREE each month at the Community Center. WCCHL sends out over 600 emails, twice a month to get out our Blog and Schedule. We have over 700 Likes on our Facebook page. Our Blog and Schedule is prominently placed on the Town’s E-Focus Newsletter that gets sent out to 900+ local neighbors. These are large numbers for a Town of 5,000 residents. So, if you are attending our regularly scheduled classes or special events, think about bringing a friend or family member or two the next time you come to the Community Center. Our mission has always been about “neighbors reaching out to help neighbors” so reach out and help us continue to build a community that is both connected and engaged.

Welcome New Sponsor

Thank you, Dave Trout and Trout Insurance for joining the Weaverville Business Association as our WCCHL sponsors. Look for their logos on our Facebook page and Blog entries.

High-Speed Internet to Come for More Households in Buncombe County

More Buncombe County households will get access to high-speed internet thanks to a third installment of grant funding. Governor Roy Cooper recently announced that across North Carolina, an additional 25,825 households and 862 businesses in 33 counties will get high-speed internet thanks to nearly $80 million in additional Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) grants.

GREAT grant awards are made directly to service providers. In the recent round of funding, internet service provider Skyrunner Inc., was awarded $1.8 million to expand internet service to 500 unserved and underserved households in Buncombe County. While final agreements are still under development, this project will benefit residents in North Turkey Creek, South Turkey Creek, Fairview Forest, Reems Creek, and the Ox Creek area. Buncombe County will provide $500,000 in matching American Rescue Act funds. This is the third installment of GREAT grant funding Buncombe County has received, and work is continuing to provide broadband access to as many households as possible.

“Continuing to connect our community with high-speed broadband internet is an infrastructure priority that will provide lasting dividends for Buncombe County residents and businesses,” says Commissioner Terri Wells. “It is wonderful to be able to share the good news with families who have been waiting for years that they are going to have access to this important technology that they can use to pursue their goals and improve their quality of life.”

Background

The GREAT grant program was established in 2018 as part of Governor Roy Cooper’s plan to close the digital divide, and is a competitive program that provides matching grants to internet service providers that may partner with individual North Carolina counties to expand high-speed internet service to unserved areas of the state.

As part of the GREAT grant eligibility requirements, all internet service provider applicants must be participating in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible low-income households a $30 per month discount on high-speed internet service or provide access to a comparable low-cost program.

Learn more about the ACP and $30 per month reliable, high-speed internet packages offered by internet service providers at getinternet.gov. Having trouble access broadband? Please complete the broadband survey here: https://www.ncbroadband.gov/north-carolina-broadband-survey
