YouthBuild Participant Impresses in Albany

This spring, YouthBuild programs from across New York State traveled to Albany to meet with elected officials. During this visit, our students had the chance to engage directly with District 17 Assemblymember Landon Dais, discussing his new role in government and his vision for the community. His candid discussion and relatable approach inspired the young attendees, showcasing the impact that public servants can have on young lives.

YouthBuild, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, equips youth aged 17-24 with vital employment skills, particularly in construction and carpentry. The program not only builds career skills but also fosters confidence and agency, encouraging young adults to use their voices for change.

Stephon Sistrunk embodies this mission. Before meeting Assemblymember Dais, Stephon meticulously prepared a speech. Although he initially missed his chance to speak, his determination led to a personal meeting with Dais. The Assemblymember was so impressed by Stephon’s courage and passion that he offered him an internship on the spot.

This story underscores the profound impact of YouthBuild. It shows how the program builds not only vocational skills but also the confidence and advocacy skills that enable young people to seize opportunities and drive change in their communities.

Young Men Establishing the Narrative is heading to the playoffs for the Junior Knicks League in their first season! They will also join the Ball & Inspire League this summer.
