MEETING MONTSE: "I AM NOT ALONE" July, Vol.15, 2021

Greetings! Coming from a small town in the Mixteca region, Montserrat (Montse), age 25, grew up helping street dogs. Her passion for animals began early in life and inspired her to leave her family behind to become a Veterinary doctor. She came to Oaxaca, our state's capital for her education. What Your Gifts Accomplish Every student is required to complete a community service before graduating. This hands-on field training required by universities is necessary before graduation, and is usually located in other Mexican states, or regions of Oaxaca. The term of service is 1-2 weeks. Students must pay for all of their trip expenses. Your gifts have made Montse's service possible. See photo. We have many students preparing to graduate, and like Montse, work in the real world, giving back to their communities.

Our Dr. Jose Completes First Year of Residency!

Great news! We are proud of our Dr. Jose Alberto who has just finished his first year of medical residency (of two years). And his grades were straight As! Whereas the medical interns receive no pay for one year of work, CdK made it possible by paying for one year of his studio rent and for some classes. While he's waiting to learn of his location for the last year of residency, he's dreaming of what to do next!  He's dreaming of returning to his home town to found an educational clinic with a focus on prevention! Casa de Kids will help make that a reality too!

Our first dinner-class since December 2019! Last week we held our first mini-class and dinner—with a full group of students, the first since 2019. The mini-class was presented by Dr. Deborah Miller, on techniques to guide and manage emotions. She is an experienced counsellor who taught in Spanish. A nutritious dinner and cake followed. It was a great night!

Educational Trip to Mexico City, August 4-9, 2021 We are thrilled to announce our first student trip to Mexico City! We have dreamed of this trip for years because many of our students have never been outside of Oaxaca. Most have a very naive perception of what Mexico and the modern world is like. We will be touring the Capital's historic landmarks, museums and cultural highlights. We will also enjoy a full day at the pyramids of Teotihuacan, America's largest man-made structures. We consider this education vital in understanding who they are, and how they will become vital members of this growing economy.
