Board of Supervisors Highlights - April 3

New Residential Housing Development Coming to Moon
The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Village at Marketplace residential land development plan, contingent on an easement agreement that may be necessary for future development of adjacent land. The new neighborhood will be  located north of Market Place Boulevard and south of the  Hirshinger Road and Hookstown Grade Road intersection.  The development will bring approximately 145 new residential buildings to Moon.

Ordinance Governing the Keeping of Chickens and Bees Adopted
Supervisors unanimously approved Ordinance No. 685 amending Chapter 27 of the Moon Township Code of Ordinances, Zoning, to permit the keeping of chickens and bees in residential Zoning Districts, subject to certain conditions. The ordinance will be posted online soon or visit the Municipal Building to view a copy.

MCA-TV Assistant Director and Graphic Designer Frank Vieira showed off the new Moon Township website design. The the recent face lift gives the site a fresh, modern look and is designed to provide a more user-friendly experience. Visit moontwp.com to have a look.

Moon Area Boys Basketball Recognized for PIAA Championship
Supervisors recognized the Moon Area High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team for their outstanding achievements in the 2018-2019 season. The team finished the season with an overall record of 28-2. They won the PIAA Class 5A State Title, overcoming a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Archbishop Wood by a score of 74-64. The team also claimed the WPIAL Section 2-5A title and was the WPIAL District 7 runner-up.  


Shay Wilden Micher Freund Earns Eagle Scout Rank
Supervisors recognized Shay Wilden Micher Freund for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. As a member of Troop 198, Shay earned 35 merit badges and accumulated over 74 combined service hours while serving in numerous troop leadership roles, including Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Instructor, Leave No Trace Guide and Troop Quartermaster. For his Eagle Scout project, Shay  organized an awareness campaign and fundraising walk for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  With fellow scouts, family, friends and the Moon Township community, the project spread awareness to over 200 people and raised $5,725.


Christine Ree Recognized for Women of Achievement Award
Moon Township Communications Director Christine Ree received a proclamation from the board in recognition of her recent Women of Achievement Award from Cribs for Kids. She was one of 25 women in the Pittsburgh area honored by the nonprofit which aims to prevent infant sleep-related deaths by educating parents and caregivers on the importance of practicing safe sleep for their babies and by providing portable cribs to families who cannot afford a safe place for their babies to sleep.

The Board of Supervisors regular public meeting is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building. Watch live on M AG-TV, Comcast channel 18 or Verizon channel 37. Property Tax Information

The 2019 Township of Moon (yellow statements) property taxes were mailed and in mailboxes on or by April 1.  If you did not receive your statement and you do not have an escrow with your mortgage, please call or stop by the tax office to pick up a copy, or we will gladly mail you one.  Remember, if you need or want a receipt for your property tax payment, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your payment. 

Online Payments
Online payments may be made through the property tax office website. Please remember, if you make an online payment through the company ECSI that manages the online property tax payments, all charges will appear on your credit card or bank account statement as either "EDUCATIONAL COMP" for bank accounts or "ECSI MOON TWP TAX OFFI" on credit card statements.  Please make a note of this, as the primary business of ECSI is handling college tuition payments.

As of April 1, the property tax office is following the spring/summer office hours:

     Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
     Thursday - 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
     Saturday - 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Spring Yard Waste Clean Up
The Moon Township Public Works department provides the following services to help residents clean up their yards in preparation for spring.

Curbside Yard Waste Pickup  
Monday - Friday
April 1 - 26
Pickups generally follow residents' regular garbage collection.* Simply place yard waste at the curb by 8 a.m. on pickup day. Residents are reminded to use biodegradable paper bags.

Curbside Tree Branch Pickup
Monday - Friday

Pickups generally follow residents' regular garbage collection.* Place branches at the curb no later than 8 a.m. on pickup day. Tree branches should not exceed six feet in length and four inches in diameter, and should not be bundled or tied.

* Please note: Areas west of University Boulevard will be picked up on either Thursday or Friday. Residents in these areas should have materials out for collection by Thursday morning. There will be no pickup on Good Friday.

Compost Dropoff/Pickup
Downes Fire Station
Residents may drop off yard waste to be composted, including tree limbs, leaves and plant matter. Please use biodegradable bags. Tree limbs should not exceed six feet in length and four inches in diameter, and should not be bundled or tied. Trash or other materials are not permitted. 
The composting program provides free mulch and compost to residents. Bring your own containers and take as much as you need.  The Downes Fire Station is located at the intersection of Beaver Grade Road and Ewing Road. Please notify Public Works prior to your arrival by calling 412.262.1700.
Electronics Recycling Day
Saturday, April 6

Moon Township's Environmental Advisory Council hosts electronics recycling days in partnership with JVS Environmental. These events collect electronic items only, including printers, copiers, computers, laptops and televisions. Only one TV per vehicle will be accepted. Other items, such as appliances containing FREON and fluorescent lighting, will be collected for a fee. Recycling collections are open to Moon Township residents only. Proper ID is required.
Coffee with a Cop

Moon Police Coffee with a Cop returns in April. Residents are invited to learn more about the police department, talk about township issues or simply enjoy some good conversation. S top over and meet the men and women who keep Moon Township safe. This is a monthly event so watch for information about future dates.

Try your luck at interactive games like the Duck Pond, Horse Wheel, Bean Bag Toss, and BIG Egg & Spoon Race. Experience the Blue Ribbon Farms petting zoo with bunnies, lambs, chickens and goats! A food truck will offer tasty treats for purchase. This is a free event.

Join the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company for their annual Lenten Fish Fry. Choose from fish, shrimp, chicken fingers and desserts. All dinners include fries and the special firehouse recipe coleslaw. Both sit-down and takeout dinners are available. To place a takeout order, call 412.262.5006.

MTVFC Sportsmen's Bash

Don't miss the annual Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company Sportsmen's Bash. Tickets,  which include food and refreshments, are available for a $30 donation. Contact a fireman  or visit one of the fire stations on Mondays at 7 p.m. to obtain a ticket.
Celebrate Earth Day at Robin Hill Park

Earth Day at Robin Hill provides an opportunity to learn what we can do to keep our environment, and ourselves, healthy. Mrs. Beryl "Randy" Johnson, a long-time Moon Township resident and educator, envisioned the first Earth Day at Robin Hill as an annual community celebration of biodiversity and environments. 
This year's theme is "Branch Out ... Grow Roots" which highlights the importance of trees, forests and wildlife. Hosted by Moon Township's Green Team, the event features many interactive vendors and activities designed to encourage ways we can all work to make a healthier environment and community. Moon Area elementary school students ages kindergarten through fourth grade participated in a T-shirt design contest. Pick up your free T-shirt, featuring the winning design, at the Carriage House. There will also be many environmentally-friendly giveaways including native plants and tree saplings.

Add Your Child's Artwork to the Moon Park Playground
Deadline: Monday, July 1

Support the Moon Park playground by purchasing a children's ExpressionArt tile.  Preserve your child's artwork on  a 4x4" ceramic tile that will be set into a wall being built on the playground. Tiles are warrantied for 50 years!

The cost is $100 each, and the deadline to submit orders and artwork is Monday, July 1.  Visit the Moon Township website to download the order form and art submission form or pick up a copy at the Moon Parks & Recreation office at Moon Park, the Municipal Building lobby kiosk, the Moon Township Public Library, or Robin Hill. Calling All Filmmakers!

The Kenny Ross Toyota of Moon Township Film Festival returns in June, marking the eighth year for the competition. Area filmmakers are invited to put their creativity to the test in the following categories: Best Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Narrative Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film, and Best Narrative Short Film. Last year, thanks to monetary donations from local companies, MCA-TV awarded more than $3,500 in prizes.

Enter your original film before the June 1 deadline and watch the event live on MCA-TV on Saturday, June 15. Films will be judged by a panel of film experts from the Pittsburgh area. You do not have to be a Moon Township resident to participate.

Waste Management At Your Door Recycling Program

Waste Management offers a residential  curbside special materials pickup.  The  "At Your Door Special Collection" program allows most Moon Township residents to easily and safely dispose of household materials.  There are three ways to schedule a collection:

After scheduling your collection date and time, a Waste Management representative will provide you with information and instructions for preparing your collection.
