Board of Supervisors Highlights - May 2

National Public Service Recognition Week Proclaimed
Supervisor Joe Wise   read a proclamation declaring May 6-12 National Public Service Recognition Week in Moon Township. Celebrated the first week of May since 1985, Public Service Recognition Week honors the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees. The proclamation encouraged all residents to recognize and express their appreciation for the vital contributions made daily by public employees throughout the township.

Two Scouts Honored for Achievements
The board recognized Zachary Patton and Joshua McCartney for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America

Zachary Patton
As a member of Troop 198, Zachary earned 26 merit badges and accumulated 181 combined service hours while serving as patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, and den chief. For his Eagle Scout project, Zachary organized and supervised other scouts, parents and friends to GPS the trails at Robin Hill Park, which will be helpful to community members in knowing the length of each trail. He also worked with the Moon Township Parks and Recreation Department to organize and supervise other scouts, parents and friends to make a new trail along newly acquired property.

Joshua McCartney
Joshua, also a member of Troup 198, earned 28 merit badges and accumulated 195 combined service hours while serving in the troop leadership role as den chief. Moon Ice Hockey Team Recognized for Outstanding Season
The board recognized the Moon Area ice hockey team for all their outstanding achievements in the 201 7-2018 season. Supervisor D avid Bachman read the proclamation honoring the team for winning the PIHL Division 2 championship title. The team ended the regular season with a 17-1 record and gave up the fewest goals against of 27 for the year. Team member Lukas Konecsni was named PIHL  Division 2 goalie of the year and player of the month for October, and team member Shawn Hytla was named PIHL  Division 2 player of the month for February. Head coach Joe Sell and seven players - Lukas Konecsni, Shane Handlovitch, Shawn Hytla, Jeff Zick, David Pawuk, Logan Konecsni and Zack Wildasin - were named to the all-star game.

MS4 Update
Kevin Brett of  Lennon Smith and Souleret Engineering provided an update regarding the township's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) training and permit, which regulates the discharge of stormwater from the township's MS4 system to ponds and streams to protect and improve water quality. Moon Township's Pollutant Reduction Plan (PRP) was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection earlier this year. It identifies actions the township will take to meet the requirement of a minimum 10 percent reduction in discharge of sediment and a 5 percent reduction in discharge of nutrients from the township's MS4 within a five-year period. Among these actions is a combination stream restoration projects and water quality improvements to existing stormwater detention basins.

Michael Trella Foundation
Mark Trella informed the board and Moon Township residents about the mission  of the Michael Trella Foundation. Mark's son Michael was a student Moon Area high school and passed away in October 2016. In his memory, Mark and his wife Sue Ellen founded the I Love You More / The Michael Trella Foundation to provide support for people in need. Specifically, the foundation raises money to support families who suffer the loss of a child. It also provides two scholarships available to seniors at Moon Area high school.
