Board of Supervisors Highlights - May 1

The board of supervisors approved proposals for exterior improvements to the Boggs Run fire station, replacement of the concrete stairs and handrail at the Public Safety Building and field lighting at the Kenny Ross Field in Moon Park. The board also approved the plans for phase five of the Wiltshire Estates housing development.

Colonel Douglas Strawbridge of the U.S. Air Force Reserve 911th Airlift Wing provided an update on the activities at the base and thanked the community for their continued support. 

Allegheny County Councilman Tom Baker presented proclamations to Moon Township's communications department recognizing the recent awards from the 51st annual Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors Citizen Communications Contest. Moon placed first in the n ewsletters, population over 10,000 category for the Moon Messenger, first in the electronic newsletters category for the Moon Township Monthly and third in the other publications category for the new resident guide.

The Board of Supervisors regular public meeting is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building. Watch live on M AG-TV, Comcast channel 18 or Verizon channel 37. Property Tax Information

The tax office began collecting the 2019 Township of Moon property taxes on April 1. The two percent discount is good through May 31. If you did not receive your statement and you do not have an escrow with your mortgage company, please call or stop by the tax office to pick up a copy. Or you can request that one be mailed to you.

The Moon Area School District property tax statements will be mailed by July 1 with the two percent discount good through August 31. The school board has through June 30 to pass the 2019 millage rate. School property taxes follow the fiscal year from July 1 through June 30 of the following year, but they must be paid in the calendar year they are billed. If you choose installments, please remember to mail the first installment no later than August 31. This indicates you are paying installments, and the remaining coupons covering September, October and November will be mailed to you.

If you wish to have a receipt for any payments you make, you must send a self-addressed stamped envelope with each payment.

Hiring Seasonal Laborer Positions

Moon Township is accepting applications for seasonal laborers with the Public Works Department. Employees in this classification are asked to perform various tasks including grass mowing, trash collecting and building, road and parks maintenance. Work hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend and holiday work may be required. For more information, please visit moontwp.com.

Moon Township's Environmental Advisory Council, with the assistance of community volunteers, hosts this event to help keep reusable items out of landfills. Eligible items include usable construction materials, household appliances, electronics, tires and some medical supplies. Only one TV per vehicle will be accepted. Other items, such as appliances containing FREON and fluorescent lighting, will be collected for a fee. Recycling collections are open to Moon Township residents only. Please bring ID.
Waste Management At Your Door Recycling Program

If you can't attend annual recycling day, Waste Management offers a residential  curbside special materials pickup.  The  "At Your Door Special Collection" program allows most Moon Township residents to easily and safely dispose of household materials.  There are three ways to schedule a collection:

After scheduling your collection date and time, a Waste Management representative will provide you with information and instructions for preparing your collection. Moon police invite residents to learn more about the police department, talk about township issues or simply enjoy some good conversation. Stop over and meet the men and women who keep Moon Township safe. This is a monthly event so watch for information about future dates.

Lunchtime Concerts Return to Robin Hill in May

The Lunchtime Concert Series at Robin Hill returns on May 15. The concerts begin at noon on the third Wednesday of every month through September.   This year's lineup offers something for everyone.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair and relax under a shady tree. There is no charge to attend.  Hot dogs, snacks and water will be available for purchase.

Hot Dog Fridays @ Moon Park

Starting May 24, visit Moon Park every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 
to hear some free music. Hot dogs, snacks and drinks will be for sale by the Aktion Club, a Kiwanis program for adults with disabilities that provides service projects throughout the community.

Memorial Day Ceremony

Moon Township is pleased to join Keith-Holmes Post 402 V.F.W., its Auxiliary and American Legion Post 924 in honoring deceased veterans on Memorial Day weekend. The V.F.W. will perform commemorative services at 10 cemeteries and honor rolls throughout the area, including the Memorial Garden at the Municipal Building. The service includes tributes by the Post and Auxiliary officers, a salute by the Color Guard and Rifle Squad, and ends with a solemn rendition of Taps. 
Residents are encouraged to remember their loved ones by bringing their memorial flag or photograph to the event.

The program begins at 11:00 a.m. with a touch-a-truck display, which will pause at 11:30 a.m. when the memorial ceremony begins with the arrival of the memorial detail. Following their departure, residents are invited to continue exploring the vehicles on display until 12:30 p.m. This event is free to attend.

Farmers' Market Opens June 5

The Moon Township Farmers' Market opens on Wednesday, June 5 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building. Stop by to pick up fresh produce, baked goods, hot prepared foods, and more. The market accepts cash, debit and credit cards, and SNAP benefits. Be sure to visit the West Aircomm booth for sustainable giveaways and learn about their program that gives children, youth and teens a free coupon to spend on fruits and vegetables. The market will be open every Wednesday through September 25.

Add Your Child's Artwork to the Moon Park Playground
Deadline: Monday, July 1

Support the Moon Park playground by purchasing a children's ExpressionArt tile. Preserve your child's artwork on a 4x4" ceramic tile that will be set into a wall being built on the playground. Tiles are warrantied for 50 years!

The cost is $100 each, and the deadline to submit orders and artwork is Monday, July 1.  Visit the Moon Township website to download the order form and art submission form or pick up a copy at the Moon Parks & Recreation office at Moon Park, the Municipal Building lobby kiosk, the Moon Township Public Library, or Robin Hill. Calling All Filmmakers!

The Kenny Ross Toyota of Moon Township Film Festival returns in June, marking the eighth year for the competition. Area filmmakers are invited to put their creativity to the test in the following categories: Best Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Narrative Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film, and Best Narrative Short Film. Thanks to our sponsors, MCA-TV will award $3,600 in prizes.

Enter your original film before the June 1 deadline and watch the event live on MCA-TV on Saturday, June 15. Films will be judged by a panel of film experts from the Pittsburgh area. You do not have to be a Moon Township resident to participate.
