Winter Plowing Rundown
As we are in the heart of the winter season, the Moon Township Public Works Department would like residents to know how they can assist with snow removal activities. A recurrent problem is that many residents are parking their vehicles on the street rather than in the driveway or garage of their homes. This often impedes plowing within neighborhoods. All residents can be of assistance to the Public Works Department by adhering to the following guidelines:
· Help snowplow drivers by staying 100 feet (5 car lengths) back so the driver can see you.
· Do not park on Township roads between 2 AM and 6 AM.
· Do not plow or shovel snow from driveways, parking lots, or sidewalks into the streets.
· To help reduce the amount of snow pushed by plows back into your driveway, pile snow near the road on the right side of the driveway.
· Place garbage and recycling containers back in the driveway entrance to avoid spilling. Questions about garbage collection should be directed to the Moon Township Municipal Authority at 412.264.4300.
· Residents with sidewalks are required to clear the sidewalks of snow.
· Remove any portable basketball hoops, hockey nets, or any other obstruction from public roadways and cul-de-sacs.

Moon Township collaborated with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant to bring voice-activated
e-gov to resident's households. This will allow users to download the skill of "Make it Moon" through their Google or Alexa app and then speak to their device to ask about events in Moon or report a problem.
This feature also allows users to find out when events are going on by asking questions such as "When is trick or treat?" or "What do I do with my tree limbs?" Also, it can be used like the e-gov service offered online through the municipality to report problems and ask questions.

Moon Township residents can soon conveniently recycle glass bottles, jars, and jugs following the installation of a permanent recycling dumpster at the Public Works Garage lot at 1115 Stevenson Mill Road.
Beginning in March, residents can drop off all colors of glass bottles, jars, and jugs during daylight hours seven days a week thanks to a partnership between Moon Township and the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC). Moon Township has been selected this year for inclusion in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and American Lung Association in Pennsylvania Targeted Radon Survey campaign. This campaign is to increase public awareness and radon testing in the selected areas. The municipalities in this program are selected based upon the radon test data and/or the geologic potential for radon occurrence. This targeted approach has been used for over 20 years. The Bureau of Radiation Protection of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) has awarded a grant to the American Lung Association in Pennsylvania (ALAPA) and is working with ALAPA to offer a limited number of free radon test kits (one per household, please) to residents in Moon Township.
Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, invisible radioactive gas that the EPA estimates may cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year nationally. This is an issue that we believe needs to be taken very seriously, particularly in your area. Pennsylvania in general has some of the highest radon values in the country, and Moon Township has radon values above the average for the Commonwealth. Any building in contact with the ground can have a radon problem. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon exposure. PADEP has conducted several similar targeted radon surveys in other parts of the Commonwealth. ALAPA also has experience conducting community-based programs to increase public awareness and action concerning this very serious potential health risk.
Testing is very easy to do. If you would like a free radon test kit from the ALAPA simply go to their website at www.lungradonkits.org and submit your local Zip Code (15108) at the bottom of the screen. While supplies last, a form will appear that you should fill out and submit. A test kit from a DEP-certified laboratory will then be mailed to you within the next several weeks. All instructions and return postage are included, as is an analysis by the laboratory and reporting of results to you. We certainly hope that you would take advantage of this free offer. If you have any questions regarding the placement of the test kit or your test results, please feel free to contact Denise Bleiler or Robert Lewis at 1.800.237.2366 or 717.783.3594. For information related to lung health, please call the American Lung Association at 1.800.586.4872 or 717.541.5864.
