Project Highlight:
Moran Plant Frame Demo
Casella Construction has been hired by DEW Construction to perform a select demo as part of the Burlington Moran-FRAME Project.

Developing safe work practices to accommodate the presence of lead and PCB contaminants used in old building materials was one of the challenges we faced when planning for this project.

We will be removing brick & CMU (concrete masonry unit) façade, precast roofs, steel (including hoppers designed to hold 200 tn of coal and standing 40 ft tall), and saw-cutting/removal of the cast-in-place foundation to proposed grade in the vacant building.
The Moran Plant is 12,500 sf and stands 80 ft tall
For decades, the City has tried to solve the problem of reintegrating the former Moran Plant
The project will stabilize and activate a derelict site, and create an iconic Burlington landmark that alludes to the area’s industrial past.
The Moran Frame will restore public access to part of the waterfront
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021
Check out this quick video to see the project in progress.
Fun Fact:
Saturday night Jamie Lee Thurston filmed a music video inside the old building! This clip shows Jamie in action!

Good luck everyone!
Good Catch, Near Miss Initiative
We are averaging 1 good catch or near miss to every 2 accidents
If we place more emphasis on recording all good catches and near misses, we can learn from them and prevent accidents before they occur.
It is important not to look at a near miss as a negative event or an opportunity to place blame on someone. These near misses should instead be viewed as an occurrence where a hazard was not properly mitigated or identified, and we were fortunate to avoid serious loss or injury.
What can we do to improve?
By talking about good catches and near misses with our teams, we can help place some emphasis back on Actively Caring for People (AC4P!).

We all should be looking out for each other and recognizing those who are consistently making an effort to create the safest workplace environment.
What is our goal?
Our goal is to report 100% of good catch and near misses, and then use that information to create a safer work environment for everyone.

Given the number of accidents that we have had over the past year, we should have seen more good catch and near miss submissions.

According to the Safety Pyramid, we should see approximately 3 good catch or near misses per accident. Currently we are trending at about .5 good catch or near miss submissions per accident.

We want to encourage everyone to participate in our program to ensure we can gather as much information as possible to help us prevent accidents.

Below is an idea of how the safety pyramid looks.
