CONCORD, CALIFORNIA - The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) confirms more Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have been detected in Antioch, in the area between Lone Tree Way and Hillcrest Avenue. And with this week's rain, filling up containers and leaving areas of standing water throughout Contra Costa County, it's more important than ever that Antioch residents take steps to reduce the places where these dangerous mosquitoes can lay their eggs and grow.
"We have been collecting these mosquitoes in our traps in Antioch since May, and this week, we collected more. That's why we need residents to be aware that this week's rain can provide mosquitoes with more places to develop from egg to adult, so it's imperative that residents dump out any rainwater that has collected in their yards," said Steve Schutz, Ph.D., Scientific Programs Manager.
In response to the latest detection of Aedes aegypti, the District is considering conducting a Wide-Area Larviciding event as soon as next week.
