WHERE TO NEXT?

Dear Traveler,

I'm back from the Azores and it was an absolutely incredible adventure! Since I last wrote you we landed on our final island - the biggest and most full of adventure - SĂŁo Miguel.

I mentioned in the previous newsletters many of the adventures we did and there are so many that I did my best to recap them in one list below.

  • Whale watching
  • Wine tasting
  • Exploring lava caves
  • Learning about the geology of volcanic islands
  • Learning about the history and cultivation of volcanic wines
  • Swimming with dolphins out in the sea
  • Land Rover and ATV touring
  • Coasteering
  • Canyoning
  • Ebiking
  • Scaling the top of an abandoned 5* hotel that overlooks the caldera
  • Fishing for tuna, swordfish and blue marlin
  • Scuba diving – including with sharks and manta rays
  • Enjoying one of the many festivals and concerts
  • Visiting a local farmer and milking his cows
  • Going for a sunset sail, enjoying hors d'oeuvres and local Azorean wine
  • Visiting a tea plantation
  • Soaking in thermal baths – abutting the sea or within a volcano’s caldera
  • Hiking – lots of hiking to spectacular viewpoints over the caldera or along the craggy coastline
  • Surfing
  • Paragliding
  • Accompanying a chef to a market to prepare cozido, a local specialty, then assisting in burying it in the ground so it cooks from the heat of the volcano
  • Eating fresh daily-caught fish, organically raised beef and local pineapple

Do you like hydrangeas? The Azores are bursting with them in summer!

If you have eight days it’s easy to fit in two islands. With less than that you’ll likely want to stay on SĂŁo Miguel. On my flight home I sat next to a couple who had stayed on SĂŁo Miguel for two full weeks, with no shortage of things to do. See more inspiring photos below.

For those of you that love concerts and even more so in unique venues (I know there are many of you!), I want to share a bit of info I learned... in 2022 a concert was hosted on the side of a lake inside the caldera of a volcano on SĂŁo Miguel.

It was called Concert 4 Earth.

The Black Eyed Peas, Stone Temple Pilots, Pitbull and others performed. Our Land Rover driver was the VIP driver for the bands and told us all about it.

Why would there be a concert here? Because it was the brainchild of Nuno Bettencourt, a famous guitar player (he played with Rihanna at the Super Bowl), who happens to be from the Azores. There was to be a repeat of it this summer, but it was cancelled (likely because he is touring). The prevailing thought is that they will plan another for 2024. And my partner has me on speed dial once she knows for sure. If I have no conflicts, I will be there! And you should be too!

However long you have in the Azores, you will be able to fill your days with adventure, food, wine, festivals, hot springs and lots of volcanos. In many ways it is a lot like Iceland, so if that is on your bucket list, consider adding the Azores too!

This week's curated list of inspiring and informative travel articles includes the world's best adults-only resorts, the “best” pizza in Rome and a Dubai hotel offering $14,000-an-hour parties in the sky.

Also information on why hotels are more expensive in Italy this summer (they are so expensive!) and the top airport lounges in the world (which absolutely does not include Air France at Boston Logan).

PONTA DA FERRARIA

Throughout the nine volcanic islands of the Azores, there are natural coastal rock pools to swim in and visiting them should definitely be a part of your trip.  Some are calm like a swimming pool and others have wild waves splashing over the edge.

One of them is particularly special.

Off the western side of SĂŁo Miguel, the largest and most volcanically active of the islands, is the Ponta da Ferraria. As you can see from the photo above it can be a bit of wild swimming. What you can't see because it is something that needs to be felt, is the warmth of the water within the natural pools. This is the one place on the island where an underwater geothermal spring merges hot, thermal water with the ocean.

How is this possible?

Ponta da Ferraria is a unique phenomenon called a pseudocrater. These are rare occurences and the Azores is one of very few places in the world that have them.

This pseudocrater was formed long ago when hot lava poured into the sea, causing explosions of steam.   In this pool, hot geothermal water from a sulphurous hot spring and cold water from the ocean mix.

The temperature varies from 64 to 82ÂșF degrees, depending on the tide and time of year. Note: the water can come out of thermal springs up to 140ÂșF, so at the peak of low tide the water close to the spring may be too hot.

As this area is located on the western part of the island it is also an ideal spot for watching the sun set. You can do this from the thermal pools or if you don’t want to get wet, from the Miradouro da Ilha Sabrina viewpoint.

The water at Ponta da Ferraria is not peaceful and you likely will use ropes to assist you.  So it’s always best to go with someone who is familiar with the area to help you evaluate the conditions and assess whether you should enter.

For those who seek adventure, bathing in a natural thermal spring in the middle of the Atlantic is a thrill.  For those who are not so adventurous, there is also a complex called the Termas da Ferraria with calm pools of thermal water, a spa and restaurant nearby.

Other than fun, are there more benefits to soaking in thermal baths?

Yes there are!

The composition of thermal water is said to have therapeutic qualities including health benefits in easing symptoms of conditions like:

  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • osteoarthritis
  • psoriasis
  • inflammatory skin pathologies

When is the best time to visit Ponta da Ferraria?

If the tide is high, the ocean water will overtake the thermal water and it will be cold.  If the tide is low, it may be hotter but could be uncomfortably so.

Therefore it is best to visit between two hours before and after the low tide, which happens twice a day.

Always check conditions first!

Good to know

During the summer season there is a lifeguard. If the wild swimming isn't your cup of tea, the Termas da Ferraria complex is a good option for everyone, including families with small kids.
