Chancery Court Records at the Library of Virginia

This presentation will begin with a broad overview of the chancery court system in Virginia and how to determine what courts might have heard cases in which your ancestor might have been involved. The presentation will discuss search strategies for querying the chancery court records database on the Library of Virginia website, how to organize and track those searches, and how to organize and download images of actual records housed on the site.

Preserving What Can’t Be Preserved

It is not always possible to preserve or keep everything in a relative’s home when they pass away. Items that have to be given away, sold, or even thrown away do often hold memories. We will discuss creating a digital record of those items and their history so that the stories and information is not lost even if the items cannot be retained in the family.

Items to be discussed include:

·        Organizing items before photography

·        Photographing items

·        Organizing photographs

·        Creating digital books from photographs by adding personal stories and memories of the item

We will discuss using digital books to record personal memories, soliciting memories from other family members, and more if time allows.
