Summer with the Library Continues 🌞

Have you signed up for Summer with the Library yet? It’s open to all ages, from infants to seasoned adults! Everyone who signs up gets a free, customizable book bag. After you complete a reading and activity log, youth ages 0–18 get a free book and adults get a customer sticker sheet. There are also grand prize drawings for things like puppets, books, LEGO kits, gift cards, and library-themed Hydro Flasks. Pick up a reading and activity sheet at all library locations, or sign up online via the Beanstack website (dpls.beanstack.org/reader365).

You’ll also find all kinds of great events happening in and around libraries this summer; be sure to check out our web calendar. You’ll find fun, all-ages celebrations in neighborhood parks that feature food, prizes, games, and more.

Summer with the Library Celebration with Red Oak Farm Alpacas

Family fun in the park with food, games, prizes—and alpacas! Join us at Frontier Heritage Park in La Pine on July 13, 10:00 a.m. to noon, as we celebrate Summer with the Library. We will be joined by alpaca friends from La Pine’s own Red Oak Farms Alpacas. Come pet and feed these fuzzy fellas! Face painting will also be provided by Pretend, Inc. Fun (and free) for the whole family! The library and several community organizations will be sharing games, activities, prizes, free books, and community information. Other summer celebrations in parks include Summer with the Library at Kiwanis Park on July 17, and Summer with the Library at Village Green on July 27.

Walk with Us: Library Walking Groups

Last year we partnered with the School of Nursing at OHSU as part of a two-year study about group-based walking programs. That program was such a success we've launched more walking groups! Get your steps while connecting with other community members. In La Pine, the Step Out! Walking and Wellness Group meets every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.; in Bend, the Wednesday Walkers meet at the Downtown Bend Library every other Wednesday for a 30-minute walk. Check out our online calendar for dates, times, and more information. And be sure to watch this short video about the Redmond walking group to get a feel for the difference the walking groups are making in peoples’ lives.

Just for Teens: Dungeons & Dragons Club

Did you know that playing Dungeons & Dragons involves reading, storytelling, and basic math? It’s also a great way to collaborate and connect with others. If you know a teen who loves immersive games, this July we have a fun Dungeons & Dragons Club starting just for them:

- Downtown Bend Library: Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m.

- La Pine Library: Wednesdays, noon

Next Staff In-Service Day: Thursday, July 11

Libraries are closed the second Thursday of the month to allow for a full day of staff training and education. This in-service day consolidates late-openings that had happened on various days each month at all library locations and provides time for staff training in areas like customer service and library processes. Thank you for your patience as we work to build a library system that grows along with Deschutes County.
