- Frequently change water in animal water dishes.
- Properly dispose of old tires.
- Keep decorative fountains operational or drain the water.
- Thin out tree branches, trim and prune ornamental bushes, and keep grass mowed.
PROTECT:
- Cover up: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
- Screens: Ensure doors and windows have screens that fit tightly and do not have holes.

Rattlesnake Awareness and Safety
Tips for rattlesnake safety
During summer, it's crucial to be mindful of rattlesnakes in backyards, on trails, and in brushy areas. While rattlesnakes are typically non-aggressive, it's important to stay alert and avoid any interactions to prevent potential rattlesnake bites. According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, most bites are reported between April and October when outdoor activities increase. Remember to safeguard children and pets in an emergency. Please call 9-1-1 and seek medical attention immediately.
Here are some key tips:
- Be alert and scan your surroundings.
- Stick to well-used trails and wear appropriate clothing.
- Watch where you are walking and placing your hands.
- Avoid typical rattlesnake hiding places such as grass, shrubbery, and weeds. Be careful around crevices, rocks, log, and stumps.
-
Bring a flashlight when walking at night.
- Move away when you hear a warning rattle.
- Seek professional help for handling live and dead snakes.
