Beyond the Candles, Latkes and Gelt
As we light the final candle
The Hanukkah candles and latkes are really just reminders of the light of love, shining since the beginning of time on every one of us. And the practices we perform in this season bring us closer to the Source.
This Hanukkah, each time you light a candle, we ask you to remember the HaMakom community. Especially in challenging times, and as the calendar year draws to a close, we hope you'll add more radiance to our vision for a vibrant and strong HaMakom. When you make your end-of-year gift to HaMakom, please be guided by these reminders:
One candle:
your gift of $18 honors the youngest community members, beginning their Jewish journey with B'nai Mitzvah studies
Two candles:
your gift of $36 supports families who come to HaMakom seeking Jewish connection
Three candles:
your gift of $72 shines a light on the practice of tikkun olam, the many ways our community members stand to be counted for liberty and justice for all
Four candles:
your gift of $108 lights the way for the elders of our community who rely on HaMakom
Five candles:
your gift of $144 shines a warm welcome, reminding us that all are welcome here, no one is excluded
Six candles:
your gift of $180 honors our joyous observance of Shabbat, the day when we delight in being and doing takes a pause
Seven candles:
your gift of $216 acknowledges that light becomes visible only as it illuminates others, just as your tzedakah lightens the entire community
Eight candles:
your gift of $242 or more embodies the truth of Proverbs 20:27, "The human spirit is the candle of HaShem, searching within." Your spirit, your generosity, your desire to shine a holy light on today's world-these make the difference between a lonely place and a community. Thank you for shining your light!
And if you feel so moved,
please support HaMakom on behalf of those
who lack the means, becoming a
Golden Shamash through your gift of $500-$1000.
