In a world where education is constantly evolving, strategic staffing has opened the door for passionate educators to shine in just the right roles. Unique staffing models, like the incorporation of Associate Teachers, allows Midland ISD to hire impactful people who can truly engage and elevate the learning of our students. Strategic staffing allows administrators to be flexible with their teams and in many cases provide opportunities for teacher leaders to emerge. Associate Teachers are paired with a Supervising Teacher, who truly steps in to model and mentor the new hire. Together they ensure that the student receives top notch lessons and the appropriate support so that they are grade level ready by their end of year goals. One of those shining examples is Associate Teacher Kara Bergeron, a true diamond whose presence elevates both students and colleagues alike.
Kara’s journey into education didn’t begin with a lifelong plan to teach children. In fact, it started quite practically. The work schedule first drew her in, followed by the realization that working with students might actually be something she’d love. What began as a temporary role while her family spent time in West Texas for her husband’s career assignment soon became a calling. In January of 2023, Kara stepped into education as a Teacher Assistant, never imagining that just two years later she would be thriving as a classroom teacher; confident, fulfilled, and exactly where she was meant to be. As she puts it, “God placed her right where she needed to be.”
Although she was initially hired to work with younger students, Kara has been with sixth graders since day one and it turns out, that is where she truly shines. Her teaching style is best described as action-oriented. She creates an engaging, collaborative environment where students feel empowered to take risks, participate fully, and grow not just academically, but personally. A successful day for Kara isn’t measured by test scores alone, it is the moment when a quiet, reserved student raises their hand with confidence for the first time.
At the heart of Kara’s approach is connection. She believes deeply that students must feel seen, safe, and valued before meaningful learning can happen. She is observant of their needs, patient enough to let trust build on their timeline, and consistent in showing up as a steady, caring presence. Her students know she values them as people first, students second and that belief is something they frequently tell her they love most about her.
Kara’s classroom is a place where learning feels exciting and approachable. She uses innovative tools like the Wayground program to boost engagement and loves hands-on activities that disguise learning as fun. One such moment involved a chemical reaction experiment with eggs. “My students and I wanted to test the force of the impact when dropped from different heights. The force of the impact was simply more than the protein layer could handle and it busted. You could see the cognitive dissonance on their faces; their brains were expecting a rhythmic bounce, but their eyes were seeing a fluid mess. The silence of the ‘splat’ was immediately broken by laughter as we looked at each other’s shocked faces, bonded by the collective surprise of a hypothesis gone wrong! We quickly concluded that it is not recommended to drop the egg from higher than about 6 inches.” When an egg unexpectedly splattered instead of bouncing, the room fell silent, then erupted in laughter. The collective joy of discovery created a memory that bonded the class and reminded everyone that learning doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.
Collaboration is another cornerstone of Kara’s work. As part of a strong sixth-grade team, she partners closely with lead teachers and families to celebrate accomplishments, address needs, and set meaningful goals for every student. Her mentor teacher, Mr. Porras, describes her as innovative, eager to learn, and incredibly effective at building connections through immediate feedback. Together, they make a strong team, modeling exactly what the Associate Teacher framework is designed to do.
For families, Kara wants one thing to be clear: their children are cared for deeply. She is committed to creating a welcoming environment where students feel empowered to advocate for themselves and supported in both their academic growth and personal well-being.
If there’s one belief that guides everything Kara does, it’s this: connection must precede instruction. Students may not remember every lesson, but they will always remember how they were treated and in Kara Bergeron’s classroom, they are known, valued, and encouraged to thrive.
