More Than A Barcode Faith
by Fr. Casey
This weekend our gospel features what is almost certainly the most famous verse in the New Testament: John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”
As familiar as these words may be, overuse may have removed most of their power. Many Christians take the story of Nicodemus, in which this verse appears, and package it as though all Jesus really cares about is a single decision. All you have to do is recite a formula in which you declare your belief in Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, and then, poof, it happens. You get your ticket to heaven punched.
The writer Dallas Willard compares this version of the faith to a grocery store bar code. When we profess belief in Christ and say the “magic words,” God simply changes our bar code, so that when we die and arrive at the pearly gates, the heavenly scanner will register us as the brand of person who gets let in.
But when you really examine the stories of Jesus in the gospels, including this one, you see that he was far less concerned with what happens when we die than he was with the shape and meaning and depth of our life. Or, as the writer Rob Bell puts it...

Break The Fast Volunteers Needed
Following the Easter Vigil on April 8, we will celebrate with the return of the Break The Fast party. For newer members and those who forgot over the pandemic, this is a potluck supper to celebrate the arrival of Easter and the end or our Lenten Fast. Everyone is invited to stay after the Vigil, have a late dinner, and enjoy socializing with all your church friends. The food and beverages for this event are donated by generous parishioners rather than paid for by the Church. Sign up now to contribute to the success of this celebration. Sign up sheets will be available at the Wednesday Lenten series and also in the Gathering Space for the next five weeks. Since the Roper Hall Kitchen may not be complete by Easter, all food will need to be prepared and plated in advance. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, serving during the party and clean up following.
For more info and to volunteer, contact:
Judy Loveday-Corbett or Liz Kerner

Children & Youth Illuminating The Word
We invite all children of the parish to join us on Wednesdays in Lent beginning March 1 to create our own version of The Saint John’s Bible. Children will use scripture to create their own beautiful art and illuminations. We will combine all our works in to one collection to share with the congregation and use during Children’s Chapel.
Our older Youth will engage in creating poems, devotions, and prayers based on Lenten readings from The Saint John’s Bible.
Childcare will be available during our Wednesday evening activities but registration is needed so we can prepare.
For full details on all offerings for Children, Youth, and Adults and to register for Childcare visit our Lenten Page.

Cautious About Putting Your Info on The Internet?
We are too! That's why Realm is our official information and event sign-up tool. Realm is not Social Media. Realm is not accessible to anyone outside our Parish Family. You can rest assured that your email address, your photo, your directory information, your giving information are safely behind individual sign-ins and not visible on the wider internet. It is the Fig's 'Intranet."
In a time when email phishing invades our email far too often, notifications from Realm are secure. Clicking the link in Realm email notifications allows you to securely respond to posts you receive. Our many ministries make use of Realm to help us keep your email and information secure.
