The BCPS Department of School Safety hosted its 25th Annual Safe Schools Conference on Thursday, June 23. More than 900 BCPS staff members participated in the virtual event.
"We were excited to bring the 25th Annual Safe Schools Conference to BCPS," said April Lewis, executive director of school safety and security. "Our theme, 'Stronger Together: Climate, Equity, and Safety' highlights the importance of our collaborative work."
The conference offered more than 30 workshops addressing topics such as social media, suicide prevention, restorative practices, unhealthy relationships, substance abuse, threat assessments, disproportionality, partnerships, and mentoring. Workshops featured guest presenters from across the nation as well as from BCPS and area organizations and agencies. (Photos of several presenters accompany this story.)
"School teams will use the information provided at the conference to support the climate, equity, and safety in their schools," Lewis said. "Safety has always been a priority in Team BCPS, and the Safety Conference is one opportunity for us to enhance our collective knowledge and skills."

Two and half months, roughly 75 days. That is a lot of time without the structure of school.
Even if children are in camps or summer school or other programs, there are still those inevitable days when they claim to be bored.

June 27, 2022
Dear Team BCPS,
When the school year ends, the work of the school system continues without pause. In addition to the summer programs offered to students, staff are intensely engaged in preparing for the next school year.
A good example of that was last week's 25th Annual Safe Schools Conference, hosted by the Department of School Safety and involving more than 900 participants, including principal-selected school-based teams, school counseling department chairs, school resource officers, athletic directors, and athletic advisors.
I am proud that BCPS continues to implement a sustained, proactive, and multifaceted approach to ensuring the safety of students, staff, and schools. Congratulations to the Department of School Safety staff for coordinating such an important event.
Throughout the summer, staff systemwide will be engaged in professional development and planning activities, building construction and repairs, curriculum writing, and more. Our commitment to our students extends year-round.
Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Darryl L. Williams, Ed.D.
Superintendent
