For Everybody...
Worship This Sunday, 10:00

This Sunday, our Jesus for President sermon series comes to an end, and not surprisingly we find Jesus among the people - specifically, the people who bear weighty burdens in this world. The passage is Matthew 25:31-46, commonly known as the story of the sheep and the goats. The passage offers good news and hope, because it shows there is a way to find the presence of Christ in this world, if we are willing to look in the right place. This week, Mike will explore the hopeful message of this important passage.

In light of the current wave of coronavirus positivity cases and the new restrictions advised by health authorities, and to love our neighbors and set a good example for others, we are again gathering online only. We hope you will "gather" together by being part of our common life online.

The online service will premier at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, of course, and you can find the service on our YouTube Channel, here.
Worship This Sunday, 9:07

Advent in a Box - Observe Advent with Your Family

In the church's calendar, the four weeks before Christmas is the season of Advent. You may be familiar with the Advent calendars sold in stores with a candy surprise behind each day leading up to Christmas. For Christians, Advent is a time of preparation and waiting. We prepare our hearts and our lives for the birth of Jesus. In this time of waiting, we can embark on spiritual practices that help center us and prepare for this day. To help families during this often-busy season, the Children's Committee is preparing Advent boxes for pickup before Thanksgiving. Included in the box is a wonderful book, Faithful Families for Advent & Christmas, by Traci Smith. We've selected a few activities and prayers from the book and included all the supplies you need in the box. If you are interested in a box, please signup here, so we know how many to make. This is our gift to you for the season.
UCH Swag Is Now Available!
Just nine days left to order in time for Christmas

We are excited to be offering an opportunity to purchase UCH swag through Custom Ink. We have t-shirts and sweatshirts for all shapes and sizes so you can show your support for UCH. The order window is open until 11/27 with items arriving prior to Christmas! Another great reason to buy is that all of the items included in this project align to our values and are made in the USA or are fair trade. Looking forward to seeing everyone wearing their gear in the coming months!

Looking to Share Your Gifts of Time and Talent?

It is that time of year that our Nominating Committee presents opportunities to our membership to serve God and others through the life of Union Church. Those who volunteer put their faith into action, sharing their passionate pursuits and talents with one another, with the church, and even the world. There are many ways for you to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church. Here are some of the Ministries looking for individuals to share their time and talent in 2021:

Ministry for Change (the new combo of Mission and Christian Social Justice Ministries)
Music Ministry
Worship Ministry

Please email JoAnn Beck, our Nominating Committee Chair, if you are interested in joining a Ministry, or if you would like to suggest someone.

Volunteer to Cook and Deliver Meals for PADS on November 24

We will be back in the kitchen with chef Paul Virant on Tuesday, November 24th to cook meals for over 100 people without homes being housed by DuPage PADS in local hotels, and we need volunteers to help prepare and deliver meals. We especially need drivers to deliver the food to the hotels. See details and sign up here: See details and sign up here. Questions: email Jane Grimm or email Heather Manning.
Mission Ministry Is Seeking Volunteers

First, we are looking for volunteers to shop and deliver food to A Just Harvest in Rodgers Park. Due to the risk of Covid-19 we cannot serve a meal, but we are supplying the food to feed over 100 people on a night in November. Volunteers would shop at GFS and then deliver the food to A Just Harvest located in Rodgers Park. If you are interested please click here to sign up.

Next, volunteer….from home! Yes! Each month we support The Night Ministry by providing sack suppers which they distribute on the streets of Chicago to those in need. That means that each month we rely on the members of the church to keep this giving alive. This is a unique opportunity to volunteer without ever leaving your home. Here’s how it works. Sign up to make sandwiches or fill sacks of packaged food. We’ll bring the items to your home and pick them up when you’re done. Two hours of your time is all it takes. It works best with a few sets of hands, since you are preparing a quantity of 130. Even young children can help.

We’re seeking snack packers for November and December and sandwich makers for December. Sign up here or email Christine Hennessey with questions.
Before We Get to Mars...
We are getting to know the community of Summit!

Remember how before the pandemic hit you had travel plans and then...they were changed? The original plans for our Before We Get to Mars project have changed as well. After some good research and initial relationship building with people in the Willowbrook Corners community, we decided it wasn't a great match for our BWGTM project. We are now carefully considering another community that we hope will be a good match for our long term BWGTM commitment.

Authentic Women Discussion Group
Wednesday's at 10:00 a.m.

The Authentic Women Discussion Group meets via Zoom each Wednesdays at 10:00 am.
We start with friendship – “What was important to you this week?! “ We select a book that will insure some “growth” to use as a “springboard” for discussion. We are presently reading The Body: A Guide for Occupants by Bill Bryson. We read 2 chapters a week prior to meeting. This book has been able to answer so many of our questions during this Pandemic time. Not written as a text book, it was recommended in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. We are an eclectic group of gals, different backgrounds, careers, and ages. If you are a “Zoomer” (or a “wannabe”) and would be interested in trying us out, please email Sue Nibeck or call her at 630.638.0540.

Help the Church with a Click and a Few Words

These days, the ringtone of someone’s boss calling them is more familiar then the ringtone of a church bell. Bell towers stand high above the tree lines to allow the sound to travel, but also to show anyone that looks up where sanctuary and rest could be found. With everyone’s ears plugged with Airpods and eyes looking down at their phones, the bell towers today mostly go unnoticed.

In these times of Covid-19, the presence of God can feel distant or even absent. But remember Exodus 33:13, when Moses asked God for help and a sign, and God said, “My presence will go with thee and I shall give you rest.”

Today, it is, in part, the Lord’s digital presence that we take with us and hopefully gives us rest. Let us increase our spiritual community’s digital presence and, in doing so, increase the Lord’s presence everywhere. One of the tools used by people new to a community, or newly looking for a church, is the ubiquitous "Google Reviews." We encourage every member to help spread the good word about Union Church by following the link below and giving the church an honest review of “5 stars.” And even if its just 1 star, that was enough for the wise men to find Jesus. Amen. (You can also find the reviews by just googling Union Church of Hinsdale; they'll show up somewhere on the results page.)

When you click on the link, “write review’ is in the top right corner in blue. Just click that link and write about your experiences.

Need something announced in the midweek email or online?

Send any requests to disseminate information to the Union Church congregation to communications@uchinsdale.org. This allows the email to be distributed to everyone involved in getting the word out.
