The Breakfast Program at St. Andrew's in white script on a light red plate with knife and spoon

MORE THAN A MEAL - MAY 2025

It has been a busy and challenging spring for the Breakfast Program. When we open our doors in the morning, the line of guests often stretches out to the sidewalk. As the need in our community increases, food prices continue to rise and some programs we rely on for food donations have been cut.

Despite these challenges, we continue to work together to provide a hot nutritious meal every single day for our neighbors in need. We recently mailed our semi-annual fundraising letter to St. Andrew’s parishioners and other supporters—if it hasn’t reached your mailbox yet, you can read it below.

Dear Friends,

This has been a challenging year for those who struggle with food insecurity. Federal programs that help the most vulnerable in our communities have been suspended or cut, food prices are rising, and local food pantries and other nonprofits are struggling to meet the rising demand.

Here at St. Andrew’s, we have seen the impact of some of these cuts. While the Breakfast Program does not receive federal funds directly, we do receive food donations from federally funded programs. The cuts to these programs have reduced the amount and variety of food we are able to receive at no cost. We have been purchasing food to supplement our food donations, but rising grocery prices are stretching our budget further.

Over the last eighteen months, we have worked hard to expand our menu beyond simple breakfast fare. Our dedicated volunteers have worked together to develop recipes and find creative ways to use the large variety of donated food we receive each week. We are proud to be able to serve homemade soups, chili, hot vegetables, fresh fruit and casseroles full of meat and whole grains. Our guests, many of whom eat their only meal of the day at the Breakfast Program, are deeply grateful for the increased variety and greater nutritional value of these new offerings. But we are concerned that cuts to federal food programs and changes in the economy may put all of this in jeopardy.

Today, I am writing to ask for your financial support. Now, more than ever, the Breakfast Program depends on the generosity of individuals like you to continue providing essential meals to those in need. If you are able, please consider making a gift.

Your support will help us ensure that no one in our community starts their day hungry. Together, we can make a real difference for those who are struggling most.

Thank you for being part of this vital work.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Cameron Swan

Cameron Swan has been a Breakfast volunteer for less than a year, but he has made a big impact. His past work experience includes 6 years as a breakfast cook at a diner in Grandville, Michigan. When Cameron moved to Ann Arbor to begin his pre-dental studies at U of M, he was looking for a way to give back to his new community and use his cooking skills. We are so grateful that he found the Breakfast Program! Cameron shows up every Thursday and Friday morning and cracks 25 dozen eggs, makes pancakes, and handles any other food prep task that needs to be done. Thank you, Cameron, for your hard work and dedication!

Panera Bread Day-End

Dough-Nation Program

For the past year, the Breakfast Program has been blessed to be a member of Panera Bread’s Day-End Dough-Nation program.

Every Tuesday evening, we receive all the leftover bread, pastries and other baked goods from Panera on South University. Our guests look forward to a special treat of Panera baked goods on Wednesday mornings, and our cooks have developed some delicious recipes to use the donated bread and bagels. We are particularly proud of our baked french toast casserole (pictured)!

We are also deeply grateful for the dedicated volunteers from Harvest Mission Community Church who stop by Panera every Tuesday just before closing time and deliver the food to our kitchen. Thank you, Panera Bread!
