I WANT TO VOLUNTEER!

Since August 16, 1982, the Breakfast Program has been “More than a Meal” to every guest that starts their day with a free hot breakfast. Thanks to the work of countless volunteers, it remains a steadfast place of community and daily nourishment. Read on to learn about new opportunities to volunteer outside of breakfast hours, a community partnership that spans decades, and our upcoming Breakfast Benefit Concert on September 13!

Dear Friends,

This month we celebrated the 42nd anniversary of the Breakfast Program. The Breakfast started in 1982 with a 10-cup coffee maker and a vision to make a difference for those who were struggling to make ends meet.

I marvel at that. I think about all that has happened in my life since 1982 – going to college, getting married, raising my family – and through all those years and milestones, breakfast was on the table every single morning here at St. Andrew’s. Many of our current volunteers were not even born when the Breakfast Program started!

I am grateful for those who took the initiative to serve that first meal and for those who have gotten up early and worked so hard over the years to keep it going. And I am honored to be able to continue the work they started–welcoming and nourishing all who come through our doors each morning.

Interested in Getting Involved?

As the Breakfast Program continues to grow and flourish, we are creating more opportunities for volunteers to get involved in our work!

New! Volunteer Waitlist

We have used SignUpGenius for many years to organize our volunteers, and now we have added a waitlist feature for Breakfast openers and servers. On the Breakfast SignUpGenius page, you will see a “Join Waitlist” button on the top right corner of the dates that no longer have open volunteer slots. If you add your name to the waitlist for a particular date, you will automatically be signed up for that date if another volunteer cancels. You will receive an email from SignUpGenius notifying you that you have been signed up.

Cooking and Food Prep Sessions

Our cooking and food prep sessions have continued to be a wonderful way for volunteers to connect in the kitchen and create nutritious dishes for our guests to enjoy in the morning. Beginning in September, we are going to have regularly scheduled sessions on the first and third Thursday of each month. We will also hold one session on the last Saturday of each month for volunteers who might not be available during the week.

Kitchen Cleaning Sessions

The Breakfast Program is blessed to have access to St. Andrew’s commercial kitchen. Although volunteers clean and sanitize the counters each morning, the kitchen occasionally needs to be deep cleaned. We are looking for cleaning volunteers to wipe shelves, scrub sinks, clean cupboard shelves and doors, clean appliances and wipe down walls. We are planning to hold deep cleaning sessions once a month starting in September.

How Do I Sign Up?

You can sign up for all volunteer shifts on SignUpGenius.

Current Volunteers: The link to the sign up for morning openers and servers will remain the same. We have created a separate SignUpGenius page for the cooking/food prep and cleaning sessions. You will receive an email with the link to sign up for those sessions.

New Volunteers: If you have never volunteered at the Breakfast before and would like to get involved, please email our volunteer coordinator at standrewsbreakfast@gmail.com. She will send you some general information and the links to the SignUpGenius pages.

We look forward to seeing many of you in the kitchen!

Thank you,

Sue Nishi

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Harvest Mission Community Church

Volunteers from Harvest Mission Community Church have supported the Breakfast Program in a number of ways over the last year. In the winter, they held a clothing drive and donated new coats, socks and other warm clothing items for our guests. They have helped at our cooking and food prep sessions, and they prepare and serve breakfast twice a month. We are grateful for their hard work and commitment to the Breakfast Program. Thank you, HMCC!

Food Gatherers

We are deeply grateful for our partnership with Food Gatherers. The food bank and food rescue program is the lead agency for hunger relief in Washtenaw County. They have supported the Breakfast Program for more than 30 years. When we received our new food license last fall and began expanding our morning menu, we turned to Food Gatherers to help us stretch our budget. Over the last 12 months, they have donated 44,339 pounds of food to the Breakfast Program. This is the equivalent of 36,774 meals! With Food Gatherers’ help, we are able to provide meat and fresh produce to our guests almost every day. We appreciate their support and all that they do to alleviate hunger in our community.

Pictured above are just a few of the nutritious donations we've received from Food Gatherers in recent months: pineapples, fresh fruits, salmon, and eggs.
