MCPD Introduces K9 Horan
The Morehead City Police Department recently introduced K9 Horan, as he works with Officer Tim Estep.
K9 Horan is trained in article searching, narcotics, tracking and apprehension, and has proven to be an asset working alongside Officer Estep on multiple calls.
The new K9 is named after Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan, who was killed in the line of duty in December 2024.
"We are excited to have the K9 Team of Tim Estep and Horan in service to our community and its citizens,” said Morehead City Police Chief Bryan Dixon. “Tim's request to honor the memory of his friend and partner, Officer Michael Horan, with the naming of his new K9 partner, Horan, signifies just how dedicated Tim takes this new role. Together, this K9 Team has already proven effective, and I am proud to recognize them as part of our bigger team here at the Morehead City Police Department."
The pair went through ten weeks of training through East Coast Canine, Inc. before working on patrol together in Morehead City. Officer Estep has been with the department for three years.
This is the third K9 team formed in the department in recent years. Officer Estep and K9 Horan join Officer Justin Jones and K9 Ranger, as well as Officer Charles Lewis and K9 Boomer.
In addition to East Coast Canine, the Morehead City Police Department would like to recognize Coastal Press and ECI Communications for their work on the specially outfitted patrol vehicle and equipment, as well as K9 Corner for supplies, food and gear.

Morehead City Economic Development
Morehead City is pleased to welcome 21st Century Software Technologies, Inc. in the wake of their official ribbon cutting ceremony May 20th at their newly renovated headquarters.
First announced by the Governor’s Office in November 2024, over the past six months 21CS has invested $455,000 to relocate their global headquarters from Boston to Eastern North Carolina, creating twenty-five new jobs in the area and reviving a vacant building in Morehead City’s Midtown West commercial district.
For over twenty years, 21CS has been an industry leader in mainframe software development with offices in the US, Germany, Australia, and continued plans for expansion. Upon their arrival in Morehead City, 21CS has recruited for jobs in software engineering and software support, with annual wages averaging $87,920, exceeding the Carteret County average of $41,149. The addition of these new positions has an estimated annual payroll impact of $2.2 million for the region – a tremendous economic development achievement for our city, county, and surrounding neighbors.
Mayor Jerry Jones gave remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony, with Councilman Richard Abell in attendance, alongside several key City employees.
