Tropical Storm Warning:

Hurricane Idalia


As Hurricane Idalia is slated to approach our area as a Tropical Storm starting today, Morehead City officials encourage you to stay up to date with the latest information and to be prepared ahead of time.

You can find weather alerts from Morehead City on our website and our official Facebook, Twitter, Threads, and Instagram feeds. In addition, any storm-related videos will be shared to our official YouTube account.


Details about scheduled events taking place Friday and Saturday will be released ahead of each event.


In addition, please follow the National Weather Service - Newport/Morehead City office and verified area media accounts for important storm-related updates.


Hurricane Season began in June and runs through November, but September is historically the peak for Eastern North Carolina.

Offices Closed for Labor Day


Morehead City's offices will be closed on Monday, September 4th, in observance of Labor Day. Our Fire-EMS and Police departments will continue to serve the public.


The Recreation Center at 1600 Fisher Street will be open limited hours on Labor Day, from 8 a.m. - 12 noon.


The Morehead City Library, at 202 S. Eighth St., will be closed September 2nd-4th.


Regular business hours for all departments will resume on Tuesday, September 5th.

School is in Session


Could you ace a pop quiz about school bus safety?


In this video, two of our School Resource Officers within the Morehead City Police Department review important details for drivers and children, including when you must stop for buses, based on how many lanes of traffic there are.


You can help keep our area students safe while they are getting on and off school buses this school year.

Carteret County Public Schools went back to class this week, which means a new school year for our five School Resources Officers in the MCPD. In this video, they all related to their students' reactions to summer vacation being over.

Final Second Saturday Concert of the Year

at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park


Don't miss the final Second Saturday Concert of the year, when Red and the Rockers will be performing on September 9th!


Please note, this concert will be held at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at 1001 Arendell St. by the train depot.


The concert will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., and there will be a food truck on hand.

Morehead City Parks and Recreation, at 1600 Fisher Street, offers a wide variety of programs and events for various ages. You can learn more about these classes and programs through our website, and register in advance. There is a mix of regularly offered classes and special pop-up classes that you won't want to miss in September.

Board of Elections Message for Voters


The Carteret County Board of Elections would like to share updates with Morehead City voters on what they can expect at the polls this fall.

Sign Ordinances Overview


Morehead City has sign ordinances in place to help businesses and individuals when they are marketing to the public. 


According to our Planning and Inspections Department, with early voting beginning Thursday, October 19th, election campaign signs can be placed as early as Thursday, September 7th.
