Finance Department Earns Distinguished Budget Award

The Town of Morehead City's Finance Department has earned its first GFOA Distinguished Budget Award for the first time, and on its first attempt. Please join us in congratulating these hardworking employees on this achievement!

According to a press release, the Government Finance Officers Association is pleased to announce that Morehead City received GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

The press release states, "The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as:

  • a policy document
  • a financial plan
  • an operations guide
  • a communications device

"Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

"There are over 1,700 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA's website. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

"Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) advances excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 22,500 members and the communities they serve."

MCFD Shares Safety Messaging

If you still have a Christmas tree up in your house or business, Morehead City Fire-EMS would like to remind you to be careful it doesn't catch fire as it dries out.

You can watch MCFD's Holiday Safety message for information on how you can prevent fires related to holiday decorations.

Police Department Conducts

Shop with a Cop

On December 13th, around a dozen area children got to participate in MCPD's Shop with a Cop initiative. Thanks to generous donations from the community, each child had a budget allocated toward items they could purchase for themselves, as well as money to buy holiday gifts for loved ones.

The children were escorted to Walmart in patrol cars with lights and sirens, and each had an officer to shop with them. Once they selected their purchases, additional members of the department wrapped their gifts for family and friends.

Stay tuned for information later this year on how you can support the next round of Shop with a Cop!

Did you catch MCPD's holiday messaging? While the videos may have seemed seasonal, the offered year-round safety tips such as keeping your car and house locked, having packages brought inside as soon as they are delivered to deter theft, and a reminder to not drink and drive.
