City to Create "Teen SPOT," a
Teen-focused After-school Gathering Space

The Mayor and City Council have approved the creation of Teen SPOT (Support, Programs, Opportunities & Technology), a teen-focused after-school gathering space at the City's Conference & Recreation Center. Teen SPOT will offer fun social/recreational activities, along with participation in supervised programs, including tutoring and homework help, use of a state-of-the-art computer lab, leadership activities and a variety of workshops. Teen SPOT will open in early 2021. |

MoVal Makes Free Computers Available |

Building on its new CLiC initiative (Computer Learning & Internet Connectivity), launched Oct. 1 and intended to bring more residents into the digital age, the City of Moreno Valley has entered into a partnership with County of Riverside Community Action Partnership to make 50 desktop PCs available for free to qualifying residents. More will be available in coming months.
"Computers and internet access are essential to modern living," said Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez, Mayor of Moreno Valley. "The pandemic has demonstrated how technology-dependent we are with so many people using computers to search for work, or work from home, or order products or get an education. We want everyone to be connected, and this is another step in that direction."
Applicants for free computers must demonstrate a household income less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level, and must agree to complete two online workshops to prepare for success online.

MoVaLEARNS - Mayor's Challenge Program to Help MVC Students is Bolstered by Donation |

On behalf of the Moreno Valley Community Foundation, the City accepted a generous $1,500 contribution this week from AAC Utility Partners, a consulting firm based in South Carolina that serves utilities across the United States and Canada. The donation will be used to support the MoVaLEARNS - Mayor's Challenge program, which provides a monthly stipend to qualifying students at Moreno Valley College to help them pay the bills and stay in school.

October 15 was Global Handwashing Day, and a great reminder that regular handwashing is critically important to avoiding the spread of coronavirus and other pathogens. With the prevention focus shifting to masks in recent months, surveys have shown fewer Americans are washing their hands regularly. But health officials are urging all of us to thoroughly wash hands with soap and warm water several times a day, and always before eating, especially as we face a second wave of coronavirus and the arrival of seasonal flu. |
