Mayor's Minute: A New SPOT for MoVal Teens
MoVal's teens have a new SPOT outside of school.

The City is proud to announce the Dr. Carla J. Thornton Teen SPOT—a new after-school space at the City's Conference & Recreation Center for teens, which provides Support, Programs, Opportunity and Technology.

After a challenging year, Moreno Valley teens need and deserve this space. At the Teen SPOT, they can drop in to see an on-site mentor, get help with homework, spend time in the computer lab and participate in more activities in a safe space.

The Teen SPOT is named in memory of Councilwoman Dr. Carla J. Thornton, a fierce advocate for Moreno Valley's youth whose service and contributions will no doubt be a model for everyone who spends time there.

The Mayor, City staff, and Moreno Valley College President, Dr. Robin Steinback, heard from students who shared stories of struggles and triumphs endured during an academic year made more challenging by the Pandemic.

MoVaLearns, offered in partnership with Moreno Valley College, provides a monthly stipend to 50 Moreno Valley residents currently enrolled in Moreno Valley College Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

Mayor Gutierrez & Kawhi Leonard Team Up for Designer Community Basketball Court Project

NBA Superstar and Moreno Valley native Kawhi Leonard is once again giving back to his hometown. Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez and the Leonard Family are working alongside NRG/New Balance and the 2K Foundation to sponsor a full-sized designer basketball court at Weston Park.

This won’t be an ordinary court. The court's surface will be a one-of-a-kind community-centric art piece designed by local artists and hand-painted by MoVal residents. This unique court will not only provide another venue for basketball but will also highlight the importance of art and artistic expression in Moreno Valley.

The Moreno Valley Kawhi's Community Court project is set to begin this coming June.
