Join Moreno Valley in Honoring America's Greatest Heroes
Beginning with its origins of recognition shortly after the Civil War, Memorial Day has become a time of reflection and gratitude for the sacrifices of this nation's fallen soldiers.

Join the City of Moreno Valley on May 27 to honor the sacrifices of America's most selfless heroes at the 2019 Memorial Day Ceremony.

At 9:00 a.m., Mayor Yxstian A. Gutierrez will preside over the City's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veteran's Memorial located at the Moreno Valley Civic Center.

Memorial Day Ceremony participants will include:

  • Council Member Carla Thornton
  • Council Member David Marquez
  • Council Member Ulises Cabrera
  • Blue Eagles Total Force Honor Guard
  • Rancho Verde High School Chamber Choir
  • Vista Heights Middle School Student Speaker
  • Knights of Columbus

The City of Moreno Valley will present a display of student artwork in honor of fallen heroes and host a reception with light refreshments immediately following the ceremony.

Moreno Valley Launches Hire a MoVal Veteran Initiative
Moreno Valley marches toward becoming the best city in the Inland Empire for Veterans with the launch of Moreno Valley's Hire a MoVal Veteran initiative.

The Moreno Valley City Council approved the Hire a MoVal Veteran initiative to encourage local business to hire Moreno Valley veterans. Businesses are now eligible to receive up to $5,000 for hiring Moreno Valley veterans. The Hire a MoVal Veteran initiative is part of the City's overall Hire MoVal program and allows businesses to receive $1,000 per each veteran they hire for up to five (5), new veteran employees.

Businesses Requirements:
  • Must have an active business license
  • Be located in the City of Moreno Valley
  • Retain the employee for at least 6 months for a minimum of 20 hours per week

Participants Requirements:
  • Must be a Moreno Valley resident
  • Must have served for a minimum of 90 days
  • Must provide DD-214 discharge papers showing an honorable discharge

The Hire a MoVal Veteran initiative illustrates how Moreno Valley takes the lead to support veterans. The City strives to create opportunities for returning veterans and their families to integrate back into the community and thrive in Moreno Valley.

Hire a MoVal Veteran adds to a host of veteran-friendly programs, which the City offers through MoVal Vets, an umbrella program that provides access to services for veteran job seekers and veteran-owned small business.

Protect Your Family by Following Important Pool Safety Tips
The Moreno Valley Fire Department responds to several preventable near-drowning and drowning incidents each year. In Riverside County, there were 42 fatal drownings in 2018. Four fatal drownings occurred in Moreno Valley last year. The Firefighters of Moreno Valley seek to prevent future drowning incidents.

The Moreno Valley Fire Department offers the following water safety tips to keep your family safe this summer:

Be Alert
  • Watch your children near a pool or spa
  • Have a telephone close by at all times
  • Teach children basic water safety tips
  • If a child is missing, check the pool or spa first
  • Share safety instructions with family, friends, and neighbors
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes, and other openings

Learn Water Safety Skills
  • Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim
  • Learn CPR for children and adults, and update those skills regularly
  • Understand the basics of life-saving to assist in the event of a pool emergency

Install Appropriate Equipment
  • Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa
  • Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order
  • Install windows guards on windows facing pools or spas
  • Install a four-foot fence around pools and use self-latching/closing gates
  • Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm for advanced protection
  • Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water
  • If your house serves a the fourth side of a fence around a pool, install and use door alarms
  • Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers, or consult a pool service provider

Homework can be difficult, but the City of Moreno Valley is here to help.

The Moreno Valley Mall Branch Library offers FREE tutoring and homework assistance every Tuesday from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm in any subject for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The Moreno Valley Mall Branch Library's Free Tutoring program is an excellent opportunity for children to receive needed homework assistance or to get ahead academically.

This week's Pet is Jack.

Jack (#A495385) is an adorable two-year-old Pekingese mix. Jack is a very lovable pup, and although he only has one eye, he has his sight set on finding a forever home.
