City to Celebrate Groundbreaking on Civic Center Amphitheater and Park
The City of Moreno Valley will break ground on the Civic Center Amphitheater and Park at a ceremony on October 3, marking the beginning of construction on Moreno Valley’s first outdoor amphitheater and the continued expansion of arts and culture across the City.

The Civic Center Amphitheater and Park is a welcome addition to the City’s growing number of state-of-the-art cultural and athletic facilities, fulfilling a commitment by the Moreno Valley City Council through its strategic plan “Momentum MoVal” to expand cultural and recreational opportunities.

“The construction of our first community amphitheater is yet another way we are continuing to expand our cultural and artistic offerings, improving the quality of lives of our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez. “We look forward to showcasing our local talent as well as attracting other performers to Moreno Valley and our highly-anticipated venue.”

The amphitheater and park will be located next to the Conference and Recreation Center at 14075 Frederick Street.
 
The amphitheater will seat up to 600 people, providing an intimate, open-air venue for Moreno Valley residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of live music performances, movies in the park and many other City-sponsored events.
 
Trees and park-like landscaping on the seven-acre lot set the scene while a stage complete with a backdrop, audio-visual pavilion, and parking for nearly 400 vehicles make the Civic Center Amphitheater and Park the region’s premier outdoor venue.
 
The Civic Center Amphitheater will be available to be rented out by the public, providing another exciting and convenient venue option for community groups and businesses.

Farragut Avenue Named Public Street Improvement Project of the Year
The City of Moreno Valley has been awarded the 2018 Public Street Improvement Project of the Year for its work to make Farragut Avenue safer for pedestrians and more user friendly for drivers.

The award was presented by the American Public Works Association (APWA), Southern California Chapter, Inland Empire Branch.

Moreno Valley’s “ Farragut Avenue Capital Improvement Project” was selected in recognition of outstanding achievement in environmental and aesthetic enhancement, public safety improvement, unique design, and cost effectiveness.

The Farragut Avenue project included adding curbs, gutters, and sidewalks in the previously unimproved roadway shoulder area, making it safer for pedestrians and providing for better overall drainage. The entire street was repaved, and driveway approaches and new mailboxes were installed.

The improvements were paid for with Community Development Block Grant funds, which benefit low and moderate income individuals by improving infrastructure and promoting a better living and business environment.

The Farragut Avenue Capital Improvement Project was well received by the community, and advances the City’s Strategic Plan goals which includes improving public safety, upgrading pedestrian access ramps to American with Disabilities Act compliance, and enhancing the quality of life for the entire community.
Firefighters, Fleet Maintenance Staff Restore 1948 Antique Fire Engine
The City’s Fleet Maintenance staff and Moreno Valley firefighters have worked to restore a 1948 Dodge antique fire truck to all of its glory, providing a glimpse into Moreno Valley’s history before it was incorporated.

The 1948 fire engine’s history can be traced back to its days of service both at March Air Force Base and the area that is now the City of Moreno Valley. The engine was initially acquired for use by MAFB and later used by the Sunnymead Volunteer Fire Department until the early 1970s, when it was taken out of service and stored at March Air Force Base until the City took possession.

Over the years, the Engine has been almost completely restored to its original condition through the personal efforts and financial support of Fire Department staff, along with assistance from the City’s Fleet Maintenance staff.

The fire truck was showcased in this year’s Fourth of July Parade and it will be included in future City events.

Fire Department staff and Fire Explorers help to keep the fire engine cleaned and well-maintained.
 Experiments Help Students Learn Scientific Concepts
Students in the City’s Think Together afterschool program expanded their scientific knowledge by learning to make bouncy balls that actually bounce.

As part of the program’s focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), students followed the instructions to create their own bouncy balls. The activity allowed students to think critically about scientific concepts and questions, helping them learn investigative skills that they can apply to many other concepts.

Activities like this allow students to explore scientific approaches and methods through a hands-on learning approach.

The Think Together afterschool program promotes college and career readiness and serves thousands of Moreno Valley students.
