 Movie Discussion Group

Moriah members please attend the first movie discussion group of the season.

Group members see the movie on their own in advance of the meeting. The meeting is led by Dick Adler, a wonderful and experienced group leader. The meeting takes place at Moriah and begins at 7:30 p.m. and ends at about 9:00 p.m. The cost is $160 per person for eight sessions. If you wish, you may attend the first session for a charge of $25.

The first meeting will be on September 14. The movie is Match, starring Patrick Stewart. The synopsis, as indicated in IMBD, is as follows: " a Juilliard professor who is interviewed by a woman and her husband in 1960s New York for the couple's dissertation. As the film progresses, it becomes apparent that the couple's intention for the interview is much more personal."

I'm sure that you'll find the discussion very interesting. I look forward to seeing you!

Yozma Pilgrimage

Yozma is a track of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism's Nativ gap program in Israel (between high school and college) for young adults with cognitive and social challenges.  Through a 2016 Breakthrough Grant from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, a Yozma track is being added to the USY Pilgrimage trip in the summer of 2017 for Chicago area teens. Similar to Yozma Nativ, this trip will provide a safe, inclusive and educational program with specially trained staff so that this underserved population can, like their peers, enjoy a fully immersive 4 week summer program in Israel. Please click on the flyer for more information on either program or contact Stephanie Smerling at [email protected].

Baton Rouge Help

We wanted to inform you that the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago has opened a fund to support broad-based relief efforts in and around the greater Baton Rouge area.
As you know, relentless flooding has devastated southern Louisiana--now a federal disaster area--where rising waters have killed at least seven people, destroyed countless homes and forced tens of thousands to flee for their lives, including many from the local Jewish community. Over the past week, the need for human services and home remediation has grown significantly.
Well over 100,000 families have already registered with FEMA for emergency aid, temporary rental assistance, home repairs and other immediate needs; there is no telling how many more will register in the coming days and weeks. In the Jewish community specifically, close to 40 Jewish families have been displaced or have suffered severe damage to their homes. Estimates for home remediation expenses alone are ranging up to $20,000 per household and few, if any, of the impacted families have flood insurance.
Our Jewish Federation Baton Rouge Flood Relief Fund will support relief and rebuilding work in the affected areas. One hundred percent of the funds collected will go to relief and recovery services in Louisiana, including:
  • cash assistance for homeowners and households to pay for temporary housing, cleaning supplies, and other flood remediation costs;
  • crisis mental health services; and
  • pre-school and school placements.
Jewish Federation staff are working with Jewish Federations of North America, the Jewish Federation of Baton Rouge and relief organizations within and outside of the Jewish community to allocate and monitor funds raised for this disaster.
We have posted a story on our website, which includes a link for donors to contribute online. Please feel free to share this with your congregation.
We invite you to make a donation to the JF Baton Rouge Flood Relief Fund.
As developments unfold, we will continue to keep you informed.

"The Hearing Loop"

Moriah has a loop system available for individuals using hearing aids, to improve communication access for our members and guests with hearing loss.  To access this system, tell your audiologist or hearing instrument specialist that your synagogue is "looped" and ask if there is a t-coil in your hearing aid(s). Then make an appointment to have it activated.  If your hearing aids do not have a t-coil, talk with him/her about alternate ways of accessing the loop.
