- Parents Night Out -
Friday, November 8th, 6 PM
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Offering our Morningside neighbors a safe and fun place to drop-off their kids, giving parents a well-deserved night out is what Parents Night Out is all about.  Our next PNO is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8th.

To make that happen, though, we REALLY need volunteers to help out. If you can spare one evening a month and enjoy working with kids, we could use your help!

We need people to:
  • Check in and register kids
  • Help in the nursery with the little ones
  • Work in the kitchen preparing and serving food
  • Organizing and leading games and activities

If you are able to help out, sign up on the Wall of Helping Hands in the main hallway or call the office.
MUMC Yard Angels Work Day
Sat., November 9th, 9:00 AM to Noon
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Plenty of preparations for winter to do around here.  Bring your work gloves and enjoy a morning of brisk fresh air, (hopefully) sunshine and fellowship as we go about caring for our building and beautiful grounds.  The Trustees invite you to join us next Saturday, Nov. 8th.

Thanks so much,
The Trustees
Open Door Churches
Salem Area Cluster Meeting
Sunday, Nov. 10th, 1:00 PM
First United Methodist Church of Salem

Our Cascadia District Superintendent, Tim Overton-Harris, will be meeting with local congregations in geographical clusters this fall to discuss the options for the future of The United Methodist Church following the decisions made by the 2019 Special General Conference.

These events are informational and intended to provide a safe space to learn about the various options, ask questions, and to share opinions and preferences with the D.S. The discussions will take place using guidelines to allow all to share and to avoid judgement or debate or attempts to persuade.

In addition, these events will provide an opportunity to ask any other questions of the DS which you have at this time.

DS Tim hopes that attendance from each congregation will include at least the
  • Pastor
  • SPRC chair or representative
  • Trustees chair or representative
  • Lay Leader
  • Church Board chair
Other leaders and interested members are welcome as well.  They are requesting pre-registration so that we know how many persons to prepare for.  CLICK HERE  to register.  There is no cost.

This meeting will surely be informative and helpful in furthering our understanding of the possibilities ahead for our church. Please plan to attend, if possible.
Morningside UMC Annual Charge Conference
Mon., Nov. 18th, 7 pm (Herrmann Hall)

Please plan to attend Morningside's annual Charge Conference on Monday, Nov. 18th at 7 pm in Herrmann Hall. This is a great opportunity to check up on the health of our church through the information and reports presented by the various committees  entrusted  with the resources and relationships of Morningside. Everyone is welcome to attend!

2019 Walk to End Alzheimer's  Report from Team Diane (UPDATE)

Brigitte Rolph shares an updated report from Team Diane's participation in the ALZ Walk in mid-October.  The team is thrilled to report that Morningside and Friends raised more than $2,000 in support of this year's walk.  It was the 7th time that "Team Diane" supported the Alzheimer's Walk, this time in Albany. (Next year it will be in Salem, again.)

The team is also excited to report that the total initial goal for this year's walk of $75,000 was significantly surpassed with approximately $90,000 raised so far.   Thank you, Morningside Family, for your generous support of the "Walk to End Alzheimer's." We love you all. - Diane & Brigitte
Lunch Share Program
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - Saturdays in November!!

Our Lunch Share Program got off to a wonderful start in October, delivering more than 200 sack lunches to the Union Gospel Mission for distribution to area homeless.

We were a bit short-handed, however, and definitely need additional volunteers for November.  Specifically, we are hoping for someone to take lunches to UGM on Saturdays.  You will need a key as the office isn't open on Saturdays, but if you don't have one, just let the office know and we can issue one to you.

It's quick and easy to pick up the bags and drop them off at the Mission (corner of Center and Commercial.)  Sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway or give us a call in the office.
Open Door Churches Youth Group

Update from Jeff Lowery
For the past 2 years, Open Door Youth Ministry has been blessed to have Aaron Lopez as our  youth ministry intern. Aaron's time with us has come to an end as of September 1. We are grateful for all of the ways that Aaron has been a part of our youth ministry, from leading and planning 2 years of youth Sunday worship experiences, teaching the Sunday school class about the Shakers, chaperoning winter retreats at Suttle Lake, and his impressive repertoire of dad jokes. It has been great having him be a part of our community.  We were happy to celebrate Aaron's wedding to Sara this summer and we are excited about what the future has in store for them. We give thanks for Aaron's ministry with Open Door.

This month we welcome our new youth ministry intern for the 2019-2020 school year Maddy Hickerson. Maddy is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon. She is a familiar face to many of us in that she grew up at First UMC in Salem and was an active leader in the youth group. Maddy has worked with youth as a staff person at Camp Magruder for multiple years and on staff at L.A.S.T. (Learning and Serving Together) the past 2 summers. Maddy is exploring a call to ministry in the UMC and we hope this internship can help her further define that call. A fun fact about Maddy is that she once pet a penguin. Welcome to Open Door Youth Ministry Maddy!
