Safety Tips For Independence Day

Make Your July Fourth A Fun And Safe Holiday

Can you believe it's July already? With the coming of the second official month of summer comes everyone's favorite patriotic holiday, Independence Day. The Fourth of July means barbecue, fireworks and time at the pool or beach; no matter what summer fun you choose to fill your well-deserved long, holiday with, you'll want to play it safe. Morrow Family Medicine wants you and yours to have a fun, festive Fourth, so we've come up with some safety tips to make sure everyone avoids injury this holiday.

Independence Day Safety: The Big Three

There are plenty of dangers you and your family should look out for not just this holiday, but all summer. Here are some tips on three major ones that are associated with July Fourth, specifically water, food and firework safety.
  • Water Safety: If your family has plans to get wet this holiday, you'll need to take certain precautions before taking the plunge. Pool-goers, especially the younger set, will need
parent or lifeguard supervision at all times, and children should never be left unattended around the water, whether they are swimming or not. Those going to the lake or beach will need to wear life-jackets at all times, and again, supervision is key to preventing drownings. This is true whether you are in the water, on a boat or simply sittin' on the dock of the bay.
  • Food Safety: Everyone has heard the tale of the potato salad left out for too long and how it can make you sick. It wouldn't be so often repeated if it didn't hold some truth, so you'll want to make sure you don't leave food outdoors for longer than necessary to avoid spoilage. Washing your hands before cooking and using clean surfaces also cuts down on the risk of food-borne illnesses. Taking these simple precautions can keep a great picnic from turning into a total disaster for your family and guests.
  • Firework Safety: Since fireworks are now legal in Georgia, explosive backyard displays are

more commonplace than ever. If you choose to celebrate the birth of your country by blowing up a small part of it, make sure you always have a bucket of water or hose nearby to douse any "dud" fireworks or put out any small fires. You should never try to relight a firework that didn't go off as planned, and children should be supervised at all times. And it goes without saying, but make sure to keep your firework usage outside and in a spacious area; fireworks are never to be used indoors under any circumstances.
By following these simple safety tips, you can assure that your time in the water, at picnics and enjoying fireworks displays go off without a hitch. Everyone here at Morrow Family Medicine wishes you and your family a happy and safe, July Fourth holiday!

Happy Fourth!
