National Physical Fitness and Sport Month
Use May as a time to get back into shape

Did you know that May is designated as National Physical Fitness and Sport Month? That's right; the month known for Mother's Day and the final days of the school year is also set aside to raise awareness on the importance of sports, exercise and staying physically fit. A little history to start out with: The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport was established by President Kennedy and the U.S. Congress in the 1950's, after a study showed that American children were less active and physically fit than their European and other foreign counterparts. In 1983, Congress designated May as National Physical Fitness and Sport Month, the same month when the President's Council was originally created.

Are You Fitter Than A Fifth Grader?
Everyone remembers the Presidential Fitness Test given in elementary schools each year, and completing all the requirements is often a big deal for a lot of younger kids.  Kennedy's President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport is where the Presidential Fitness Test originated, and even if you didn't know May was National Physical Fitness and Sport Month, there is a good chance the words "Presidential Fitness Test" brought back memories of having to do a certain number of pull ups or being able to touch your toes in a sitting position.

Tips for getting and staying healthy
So now you are caught up on where National Physical Fitness and Sport Month originated. So what are you going to do this May to keep physically fit? Adults often don't have the time or resources necessary to remain as physically fit as we might like, so here are a few tips on getting yourself a bit healthier this month and throughout the year.
  • Join a gym: This seems like a no-brainer, but joining a gym is a great way to start getting yourself back into a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes simply having a gym membership can push people toward working out and staying fit, if for no other reason than they don't want that money going to waste.
  • Take up a sport: There are plenty of adult sports leagues in the metro area, everything from ALTA for ladies tennis to organized bowling leagues. Maybe it's time to pick back up where you left off with a sport you enjoyed when you were younger?
  • Stay active: Even if your physical fitness regimen is nothing more than a walk around the neighborhood after dinner every night, staying active, even minimally, can go a long way toward keeping you healthy and in shape. Take the stairs instead of the elevator once in a while and you're doing more good than you probably realize.
These three pointers are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to remaining in good physical health. Eating right, staying active and living a clean lifestyle all add up. Making good, healthy choices can and will lead to a happier and more physically fit you.
See you at the gym!

Happy May!
