SUCCESS STORY:

Celebrating One Year Smoke-Free

It was 11:59 p.m. the night before Jim Quinn Jr.’s 59th birthday when he finally decided to quit smoking. He stubbed out his last cigarette, threw out all his supplies, washed his hands, rinsed out his mouth and declared, “I am done.” Jim had been smoking three packs a day for 44 years until starting Mosaic’s Tobacco Cessation Program.

Now, a year later, Jim celebrated his 60th birthday with an ice-cream cake and his mom and dad by his side. His dad—a man of rare praise and the only other family member to have kicked the habit—told his son he was proud.

Jim, a Prineville resident for 26 years and a Mosaic patient for over 13 years, grew up in a “smoking family” and started smoking at age 14. He began his journey to quit in December 2022 after Family Nurse Practitioner Linda Hatch referred him to Mosaic’s tobacco cessation classes.

Celebrate With Us!

Last month, the Health Resources and Services Administration announced the Health Center Quality Leaders (HCQL) awards and Mosaic was one of only five recipients in Oregon. Mosaic received a HCQL Bronze Award for our quality scores, placing us in the top three deciles compared to all Federally Qualified Health Centers nationally. Congratulations to Mosaic staff for their hard (and high-quality) work!

The Sisters School-Based Health Center, located adjacent to Sisters High School, recently celebrated one year of expanded operations. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden marked the event with clinic staff and patients. Read more from the Sisters Nugget.

The Oregon Community Credit Union (OCCU) Foundation generously donated $19,500 to support necessary upgrades at Mosaic's Redmond HIgh School-Based Health Center. The funds were used to help create a safe and welcoming place for students and other pediatric patients seeking support for their healthcare needs. Read the media release.

Mosaic is preparing to welcome Ben Khalil, MD, to the Madras Health Center in August 2025 after completing his OHSU internship in Portland. Dr. Khalil is part of the Three Sisters Rural Track Program, a partnership with OHSU designed to prepare family medicine physicians to address rural healthcare challenges, supporting Mosaic’s mission of increasing access to high-quality care in Central Oregon.

We are so grateful to be part of a community that is committed to taking care of each other. Thank you! View our organization donors here; view the full list of Mosaic donors in our Community Impact Report.

Thank you to First Story for their donation in support of Mosaic's Mobile Clinic. Their generous gift helps us reach people where they are and improve health equity in our community.

Street Medicine Institute (SMI) staff and consultants paid a site visit to our pilot mobile outreach team earlier this fall and accompanied them on their visits to unsheltered patients. They met with staff and community partners and presented to Mosaic staff on the organization's work. Earlier this year, Mosaic was awarded one of two national 2024 Seed Grants from SMI. The grant includes $10,000 and a year of intensive consultative support from street medicine experts.

We’re deeply grateful to the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) for their continued support of Mosaic. We are proud to be one of the organizations to receive funding through their recent $5.8 million investment in Oregon nonprofits. These funds empower us to continue providing accessible, high-quality care to our Central Oregon community.

OCF team members partnered with Mosaic earlier this winter to prepare 150 warming kits for the houseless population. These kits include essentials like socks, hand and toe warmers and an emergency blanket to help individuals stay warm and safe. We’re so grateful for this incredible collaboration and the care shown for our community members in need. Mosaic’s mobile clinic will distribute these kits, ensuring they reach those who need them most.

Mosaic received a $600,000 federal grant to boost mental health and addiction treatment in Central Oregon. Learn more about the Behavioral Health Service Expansion Awards HERE
