The gematria of Amalek is 240. Since we're working to strengthen faith in Hashem on three levels - thought/word/deed - this equals 3 times 240, which is 720. (Chiddush found in a letter written by Rav Avraham Kokhav-Lev Sternhartz z”l, based on the Bnei Yissa’char).
Throughout these hours Hashem extends a special kindness to rescue every Jewish soul from impurities. This is on condition that the person is careful about their use of time during this period.
