The 86th Annual Meeting of the American Mosquito Control Association, will be held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon from March 16 - March 20, 2020. This meeting will consist of educational sessions and exhibits that illustrate and highlight the latest science, technology and products used to conduct research and control vectors. The meeting will also provide ample opportunities to network with vector control professionals, researchers and educators from around the world during multiple social events.

Federal Funding

On December 17, the House of Representatives adopted H.R. 1865, the Consolidated Domestic and International Assistance Bill, which now awaits Senate action. The measure, which provides funding for FY2020 for Labor HHS, and other government agencies includes the following highlights.  We will keep you apprised as the bill progresses in the Senate, anticipated for later this week, as well as information regarding additional provisions as they become available.  The Consolidated appropriations measure:

  • Provides level funding of $38,606,000 for Vector-Borne Diseases.
  • Includes language encouraging the CDC to “continue efforts to fund activities as designated under the Mosquito Abatement for Safety and Health Programs Act”.
  • Adopts the TICK Act requiring the development and implementation of a national strategy and regional centers of excellence to address vector-borne diseases, including the identification and assessment in gaps in federally-funded programs and the identification of strategic goals to address such diseases and appropriate benchmarks.

Comment on Proposed Pyrethrin Label Language

AMCA is seeking your comments on the Pyrethrins’ Ecological Risk Mitigation Proposal for 23 Chemicals document. To be included in AMCA’s general statement, please send notes to the Technical Advisor to consider no later than January 6, 2020. Your comments will help guide the Environmental Protection Agency in preserving the tools in our “toolbox” for future uses and ensure that future regulations do not put a burden on protecting public health from mosquito-borne diseases. 

The Proposal and all supporting documents pertaining to pyrethroids/pyrethrins as a group are posted in a Special Docket for the Pyrethroids, Pyrethrins, and Synergists, EPA-HQ-OPP-20080331.  You can comment directly to the docket through January 13, 2020. For more information click here .

Apply Now for the Vector Control Technical Assistance from NACCHO

NACCHO is accepting applications for the Vector Control Collaborative technical assistance program. Participants in this program will be matched with a mentor who will visit them to provide on-site technical assistance in mosquito and/or tick surveillance and control. Drone Training Grant Opportunity

DARTdrones is offering training grants for local governments. The DARTdrones Local Government Grant provides full or partial funding to departments for courses such as  Part 107 Test Prep Training Basic Flight Training Real World Flight Planning & Execution Program  and  private, on-site public safety drone training .  Deadline for application is January 31.  

Tick-borne Disease Working Group

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) announced the Tick-borne Disease Working Group (TBDWG) will be meeting on January 28 and 29, 2020 in Washington, D.C. The Working Group will hear presentations from eight subcommittees on their findings and potential actions for the TBDWG to consider and discuss plans for developing the 2020 report to the HHS Secretary and Congress on federal tick-borne activities and research.  Preregister to attend via webcast or in-person. Public comments will be accepted.  Click here for more information.
