Arts Blast on the Air
Now a Downloadable Podcast
Arts Blast on the Air is not an audible version of Willi Miller's Arts Blast, as you'll discover when you click on a show link. The weekly radio show offers interviews with people active in the arts locally, regionally, and nationally. The very first show had local artist Lee G. Smith and the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, JoAnn Falletta. For this Sunday's show, I talk with author Brad Meltzer and Gifford native and Broadway performer Jamari Johnson Williams. Listeners to my old Arts Spotlight program on WQCS years ago will think it's back, but a lot longer! Personally, I'm thrilled to have this opportunity and hope you will enjoy listening to it as much as I do producing it. It would not be possible without our great sponsors, Riverside Theatre and Ballet Vero Beach, and collaborator Donna Roberts Mitchell. Thanks for listening!
We're still tweaking the tech stuff, so please be patient. The addition of a downloadable podcast is an exciting step for Willi Miller's Arts Blast!

Opening at The Galleries of First Pres
The Galleries at First Pres will offer an opening reception for the Fall Art Installment on Sunday, October 17, 2021, from 2:00 to 4:00pm. The show will feature the works of local artists Mimmo Amelio, Jean Archibald, and Judith Bairstow. The galleries are located throughout the campus of First Presbyterian Church at 520 Royal Palm Boulevard in Vero Beach. Admission is free.
Domenico “Mimmo” Amelio was born in Naples, Italy in 1949, relocating to the United States in 1966. "My paintings vary from cubism, impressionism, expressionism, astroism, or abstract, and are always optimistic with vibrant colors,” Amelio said.
Archibald’s realistic watercolor paintings depict beautiful landscapes, old barns, dilapidated houses, and boats. The artist is now an instructor at the Sebastian River Art Club and teaches watercolor classes on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
Judith Bairstow was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Toronto, Ontario, and Derby Lane, Vermont. She inherited a love of photography from her grandfather and father. “I began painting when I found colors, images, or design in my photographs and wanted to remove undesirable elements from my pictures, before the advent of photoshopping. Oil painting allowed me to edit the image to my liking. I love natural settings and have photographed many beautiful scenes during my travels.

Calling All Artists to Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens
The 3rd Annual Art Show in The Gardens will highlight local, regional, and renowned artists in the mediums of Original - 2D, 3D, Jewelry & Fine Crafts. The show will also include music, dancing, food trucks and more. A variety of food, snack and beverage vendors will be on hand for your culinary pleasure as well as art raffles and local non-profit agencies to complete the mix. Our “Party With The Artists” will be back with an afternoon reception, an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists while enjoying a selection of hors d'oeuvres, adult beverages, friends, and good music. The reception will be held Saturday, January 2, immediately following the show, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Art Events Lawn. Tickets are available on-line to the public for $25 for 1 ticket -or $40 for two tickets and include two drink tickets per ticket. You can get your tickets at www.pslbg.org/artparty. *** CALL FOR ARTISTS *** We have a limited number of booths available for new artists wishing to apply for our art show. If you are interested in becoming an approved artist, please apply online at www.pslbg.org/artapp
Plein air artists are invited to set up easels at Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens.
Spokesman Mark Barnes explained how it all began back in 2019. "A small group of dedicated volunteers started tossing around the idea of starting an art show beginning in January 2020. ... With a focus on the community and making sure our artists had a venue as well as an event that would be successful for them, the art show became a reality and one of the most successful events that was held at the gardens to date. Many of our initial artists that year reported selling out and a good time was had by all."
Being part of it is easy, Barnes said. "We have a simple online application at www.pslbg.org/artapp, where artists can complete and make their payment, and (then send) the required collateral for review. Most reviews are done within 48 hours and the artists ... notified. About 15 days before the show, load-in, booth, and any other pertinent instructions are emailed to all artists. We personally greet each artist during the load-in and make sure it’s a fun and smooth process. After all without them, we don’t have a show!"
The traditional Festival of Lights opens Thanksgiving weekend at the Gardens, and after the January art show, the Botanical Garden Festival & Plant Sale is the second weekend of February. This year the Botanica Festival will feature the Port St. Lucie Orchid Society’s Orchid Show & Sale.

Art in Public Places in Brevard County
Lynne Brezina, art services manager for the Brevard Cultural Alliance explained how and why the program began:
Brevard County does not have a percentage of its budget set aside for an art program which would lend to the funding for sculptures and large scale public works of art. (Although) we have had some in Brevard that were special projects.
In order to compensate for not having a funding source for large scale projects, we started the Art in Public Places Temporary installation program.
This program was started approximately 28 years ago, with just a few sites, which included Melbourne International Airport, Cape Canaveral Hospital, and the Government Center in Viera.
We had to develop a program in which we could showcase and sell artwork created by our local talent. This program not only provided quality venues to exhibit artwork but in turn created a stimulating work environment for businesses and an opportunity for their clientele to view and purchase local artwork.
As time went on we were able to fine tune the program, where we now have 28 display locations and approximately 400 pieces of artwork out on display which is changed out every 4 months.
The artwork is offered for sale while on display. BCA handles the curating of site specific exhibitions, installation, signage, Releases of Liability, contracts for businesses participating in the program, checks to artists for artwork sold , running credit cards and maintaining inventory. There is a minimal service fee charged to artists on the sale of artwork.
Lynne will continue the story in another issue of Arts Blast.

At the Elliott - The Highwaymen...Vistas and Visions
From The Elliott Museum:
In the 1950s, several African-American self-taught artists from the Treasure Coast began painting Florida’s vivid landscapes. Coined as the “Highwaymen,” they sold their art out of their car trunks as they traveled the highways, which led to their nickname. Highwaymen paintings now hang in the Smithsonian, and several Highwaymen artists are represented in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Today, very few of the original 26 artists remain but fortunately, many of their paintings — which are now sought after by collectors worldwide — still do. More than 70 of their paintings will be showcased at The Elliott Museum in this special exhibit.
There will be two opening night receptions. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, an exclusive, ticketed preview opening reception will include live painting demonstrations by original Highwaymen artists Roy McLendon Sr. and Roy McLendon Jr. Attendance will be limited. The evening also will include a guided art tour by noted Highwaymen collector and dealer Roger Lightle. Admission is $125 and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres and two beverages (choice of wine, beer and soft drinks). Several of the paintings will be available for purchase.
On Thursday, Oct. 21, An opening reception for the public will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature a live painting demonstration by original Highwaymen artists Roy McLendon Sr. and Roy McLendon Jr. and presentation by noted collector and dealer Roger Lightle. The ticket price is regular museum admission for guests (adults 13-64 - $14, seniors 65+ - $12, children 6 to 12 - $6, under 6 – free) and $10 to members and includes hors d’oeuvres and cash bar for wine, beer and soft drinks.

It's a New Season at Vero Beach Museum of Art
The Vero Beach Museum of Art begins the fall season with American Perspectives: Stories from the American Folk Art Museum Collection, in partnership with the Art Bridges Foundation, in the Holmes and Schumann Galleries through January 2, 2022.
The Museum extended an invitation to members of the Vero Beach Art Club to submit their work to be juried into the exhibit. Among those selected were two pieces by Mark San Souci, The Victory: Dad, Daughters, Balloons, and Florida June Flowers.
The exhibition offers more than 90 examples of American folk art that include paintings, pottery, quilts, needlework, and sculpture. Carousel figures, wood carvings, and dolls join the traditional portrait and landscape paintings.
From Vero Beach Museum of Art:
Folk artists, sometimes referred to as self-taught artists, are individuals whose talents emerged from personal experience rather than formal training. Their creations are beautiful, diverse, truthful, often utilitarian, and rooted in their individual heritage or community. The works in American Perspectives are organized into four sections -Founders, Travelers, Philosophers, and Seekers - that respond to such themes as nationhood, freedom, community, imagination, opportunity, and legacy.
Senior Curator Anke Van Wagenberg said, "Beautiful, diverse, and truthful, the art illuminates the thoughts and experiences of indivduals with an immediacy that is palpable and unique to these expressions. Visitors will be able to access contextual information in the exhibition to further reveal the vital role that folk art plays as a witness to history, carrier of cultural heritage, and a reflection of the world at large through the eyes, heart, and mind of the artist"
The exhibition is organized by the American Folk Art Museum, New York, with support provided by Art Bridges. It was originally curated for installation at the American Folk Art Museum, February 11, 2020 — January 3, 2021, by Stacy C. Hollander, Independent Curator. The tour was coordinated by Emelie Gevalt, Curator of Folk Art, the American Folk Art
Museum visitors are encouraged to participate in a series of upcoming related programming including lectures, studio art classes, artist workshops, Art Talks, and artmaking projects for families. For more information and to register for programs please visit the website www.vbmuseum.org call (772) 231-0707 ext. 136.

A Side Show at the Henegar
From Dominic Del Brocco at The Henegar Center for the Arts:
The second show of the 31st season at the Henegar is Side Show, rated PG 13. "This is a first, not just for the Henegar but for all of Brevard Country. SIDE SHOW has it all, incredible belting vocals, stunning costumes and make up, a wow factor set, energetic choreography, cirque elements and dazzling lights and tech."
Two things make Side Show extra special, Del Brocco said. Every role is based on real people, "Some historically acclaimed and some not so well known… but all rooted in truth and reality. The Hilton sisters, Daisy and Violet, were actually conjoined twins that made their way from the dark of a traveling carnival side show or 'freak show' attraction to Vaudeville and finally Hollywood. Their story and bond is a sad one. They had an incredibly hard life from start to finish."
In addition, "the Show is unique for many other reasons but one of which is the added challenges of the 'attractions'. The two leads, Daisy & Violet, must sing, dance, and act their way through 98 percent of the show actually attached at the hip. Through the magic of costumes, directorial blocking and staging, lighting, and other means, the girls must be in unison lock step to navigate platforms, stairs and dance numbers." The sisters are played by Sofia Brodner and Grace Custino. "They will be attached at some point for up to 4 hours with minimal time to separate for quick breaks. This show is physically, mentally, and spatially challenging and these two girls knock it out of park.
"The girls are not the only ones with physical challenges. Ever try and do choreography with a third leg or no arms? All of the attractions must perform beyond the limitations of their condition. These unique and bizarre costumes are brought to life by costume designer Marcy Szymanski and famed make up and effects designer Alan Ostrander of AEO Studios."
The show runs weekends through October 24.
