Decoding the Paint Strip

house-front-sm.jpg
Spring often inspires us to update/refresh our interiors and paint is a fairly inexpensive way to really change the look of a room. Unless you get the color wrong and have to repaint, not fun.

Now comes the hard part,  picking a color.  How do you know which color to pick from the 5 colors on the strip?   Usually, the middle colors are suitable for the walls and the top (lightest) color works well for the ceilings and trim.  The darkest color can be used as an accent, maybe for the back of a nook or use it to paint your trim.  Painting trim or doors a dark color can really make a room pop.

Try to get a large paint sample from the paint store or buy those small jars and paint a large sample on the wall.  Look at the color at different times of the day because as the light changes outside it will affect how the color looks.  Some tans can go pink or coral with the right sunlight.  Many grays can appear to have a green, blue or even purple undertone.  The bigger the sample the easier it will be to see the undertone.  It's pretty hard to see that in those tiny squares.

If you want to use two different colors on your walls, like moving from a room to a hallway, select colors near each other in the fan deck.  Usually in a fan deck colors next to each other will usually be of the same hue and will blend nicely.  Next, pick colors in the same row on each strip or just one up or below.  If you select color #1 and color #5 they won't flow seamlessly. The hue of the color is really important for blending.

If you really don't trust yourself hire a decorator.  Most will do a color consultation pretty inexpensively.  If you figure the cost of your time and the cost of paint, it's worth making sure you get it right the first time.  Nobody wants to repaint.

Happy painting!

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

gift_momsday.jpg
You love your mom and you are thankful for all she does for you. Below are some ideas to help you express how you feel about her?

Sometimes it's so hard to buy gifts for the people that mean the most to you, right?

To simplify the process try to come up with a theme: things to help her relax, a basket with everything in her favorite color, coffee or team items etc...  Moms are practical so maybe getting her something she would never buy herself, like that Mercedes she's had her eye on...jk.  Just seeing if you are still reading this paragraph.

 Relaxation Theme:
- Great Robe and slippers
- Luxury soaps or body oils
- Bath items, if she loves that stuff
- Massage gift card or facial

Coffee or Tea Lovers
- A great new coffee maker
- A basket of some different types of coffee beans
- A cute new tea kettle with tea cups
- Make something to have with the coffee or tea like shortbread cookies or biscotti

Fitness Mom
- Buy a pack of classes she can try at a nearby gym
- New yoga mat and water bottle (we all keep that stuff too long)
- Cooling towel for during her workout
- New athletic gear

Color Theme (ex. pink)
- Make a basket of pink related items: pink thank you cards (we all use those), pink candle, earrings, scarf, sweater, throw etc.. You get the idea.

Wine Lover
- Get her a bottle of wine she would probably not spend the money to buy.
- Wine charms
- New wine glasses.  Who doesn't need those?
- A basket of things to eat with her wine (crackers, cheeses, grapes, chocolate, nuts etc..).

It doesn't have to be expensive just thoughtful A picture of the two of you is always a special gift.  You can get it printed  on wood, for a neat twist at Woodsnap.

Company Eggs

This is a repeat recipe but it's so yummy that it's worth repeating.
You can make it ahead of time which makes it easy.  Even freeze and reheat if necessary.

Ingredients
  • Cooking spray
  • 10-12  eggs, beaten lightly
  • 1 (16 ounce) packages cottage cheese
  • 1 pound shredded monterey jack cheese
  • 1 (4 ounce) can diced green chiles
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.  Prepare a 9 x12 -inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Mix eggs then add in flour, baking powder, salt and melted butter.
  3. Stir in cottage cheese, jack cheese and chiles.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until firm and slightly brown on top.
** Add in sausage, bacon crumbles or chopped vegetables to change it up if you want.  For individual servings pour into large muffin tins, adjust the baking time accordingly.  You could then freeze them for later.

Enjoy!!

New Products / Gadgets

Here are a few new things that I've come across that I thought were worth passing along.

Vivian Lou Insoles

Do you love to wear heels but hate how much they make your feet hurt?  These insoles were designed by a podiatrist to shift your weight and prevent heel pain.  They also relieve the pain I get in my forefoot when I wear heels.    More Info

Mirror - this is cool!

I love to attend exercise classes but with my work schedule working out at home is really the best option for me.  Unfortunately, this limits the choices I have for a workout...until now.  The mirror allows you to do just that, take online classes and watch through the mirror as if you were there.
It also shows your heart rate and calories burned on the mirror plus many more features.  Amazing technology.  Learn More

The Ordinary Makeup
I heard about this company a while back and actually saw an Ordinary store while I was in London last summer.  These are basically the generic form of some of your favorite products, you just aren't paying for the fancy label.   I've used a primer from The Ordinary that works pretty well  plus their Vitamin C oil.  The best part is all of these products are about 1/4 the price or less!  Sephora has started to carry a few of their products.  Brandless
This is another brand that delivers generic makeup but they also carry generic forms of home goods, cleaning supplies, pet food, gift bags/wraps etc...  More Info

Slighter
No someone who's wanting to quit smoking?  This new product, which is a lighter,  offers a little different approach.  Powered by Artificial Intelligence software, Slighter learns when you smoke and creates a personalized plan to help you reduce smoking gradually.  Apparently, it will only light when it's your time to smoke.  It also tracks how much you smoke and shares the data with your support group.  It also lets you know how much money you've saved by cutting down, which is a unique feature.

Array by Hampton Video Coach Light
This smart exterior light fixture comes with a discreet HD camera that includes night vision and wide-angle viewing. The light also has a microphone and speaker for two-way audio and you can control it through the app.  You can also get alerts when someone is at the door.  When the camera senses activity, the light will brighten to illuminate your front door.  This is a nice alternative to the doorbell camera option. 4 Spring Cleaning Hacks

Raise your hand if you love to clean your house?  I'm pretty sure I'm not seeing a flood of hands being raised.  Unfortunately, this is an necessary evil that we must tackle.  Perhaps one of these tricks an save you time and maybe some money$$.

1) Clean your toilet with Coke

It's just not for tooth decay anymore ;)  3 quick steps:
  1. Pour Coca-Cola along the edges of the toilet bowl, the carbonation will take care of the heavy lifting for you!
  2. Leave the soda in the toilet overnight.
  3. The next morning, flush the fizz away and your toilet will look good as new.
Unfortunately, it won't help with cleaning the rim or around the toilet (mom's with boys in the house) but at least the inside is done.

2) Clean the inside of the dishwasher using lemonade Kool-Aid.  This helps remove lime deposits and iron stains.

This is perfect for areas with really hard water, like Arizona
  1. Pour a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (this is the only flavor that works) into the detergent cup and run the washer while empty.
  2. The citric acid in the mix wipes out stains, so you don't have to.
3)  Remove stains from teacups and coffee mugs.
  1. Sprinkle salt on the white part of a lemon peel.
  2. Gently rub the affected area till clean.

4) Get rid of stains on your suede.
This one surprised me.  Ideal for coming off winter and cleaning up those cute boots for next year.
  1. It's so easy, you won't even believe it. Just get an emery board nail file.
  2. Gently rub the nail file on the stains to remove them.
