JAN'S PICK

A Match Made for Murder
Lane Winslow Mystery #7
by Iona Whishaw

Lane and Darling are on their honeymoon in Arizona but there is a murder...
This one has glamorous couples (some with very dark secrets), the mob, and Sergeant Ames solving a murder back in King’s Cove along with an intriguing new character. The author manages to bring contemporary issues alive in a series about people in the ‘40’s. I love this series!

TOM'S PICK

Soap and Water &
Common Sense
by Dr. Bonnie Henry

In these demanding times Dr. Henry has emerged as a rock star in her daily updates regarding COVID-19. She communicates with awareness, kindness, and compassion. This comprehensive book covers microbes & bugs in our world, detailed but not difficult to understand, in Dr. Henry's down to earth style.

ANTONIA'S PICK

Talking with Bears:
Conversations with Charlie Russell
by G.A. Bradshaw

One of the most touching and empathic books I have read in a long time. G.A. Bradshaw presents some of the most beautiful thought processes about bears, and wild life in general, from the mind of Charlie Russell. Wise, respectful and pragmatic, Russel politely denounces the path of anthropocentrism, humbling himself to these sensitive, sentient, and misunderstood giants of the woods. I cannot wait to read more about Charlie Russell and his philosophies about, and experiences with, bears.

MITZI'S PICK

Two for the Road
by Roddy Doyle

A treat for Roddy Doyle fans and a fun introduction to his work for those not yet familiar, this slim, well designed little gem had me both chuckling and laughing out loud throughout!
Reading Two For The Road is like eavesdropping on a couple of old gents talking current events over a pint, or two, in the local pub, and it is hilarious.
The only complaint I have about this book is that it is too short! It was a great escape, while it lasted.

BARB'S PICK

The Scientist and the Spy
by Mara Hvistendahl

In this riveting true story, the author gives a gripping account of a far-reaching investigation that pitted a veteran FBI special agent against Florida resident Robert Mo, who became a pawn in Chinese industrial espionage aimed at stealing the trade secrets of corporate giants Monsant and DuPont Pioneer.
A fascinating read!
MARIANNE'S PICK

Things in Jars
by Jess Kidd

If you love a good mystery, this unusual Victorian tale does not disappoint. Jess Kidd is a wonderful story teller, whose writing intertwines mysterious Victorian elements with humour, folklore, and a marvelously crafted female detective, Birdie Devine. Birdie smokes a pipe, is befriended by the ghost of a man who claims to know her, and has a 7 foot tall housemaid whom she rescued from a carnival act.
Vastly entertaining, featuring incredibly likable characters, I hope Birdie gets her own series!
