Prior to October 2, the House makeup was 101 Democrats, 101 Republicans, and one vacancy. However, Lindsay Powell (D) was sworn-in to office to give the Democrats a 102-101 majority. Powell won a special election on September 19 to replace Rep. Sara Innamorato (D) who resigned to run for Allegheny County Executive.
There may be another vacant seat shortly, as Rep. John Galloway (D-Bucks) may resign this month in order to campaign for magisterial judge. If that occurs, the House makeup will be back to 101-101 and legislation may be at a standstill once again.
Although the General Appropriations Act was signed into law over the summer, corresponding budget-related bills have yet to pass in the Legislature. Fiscal Code, Tax Code, and School Code bills passed in the House of Representatives the week of October 2. However, the bills were not agreed to by the Senate, so their status remains unclear. Each chamber has three session weeks scheduled for the remainder of the year.
On November 7, 2023, there will be a general election with local and judicial elections such as township supervisors, county commissioners, local judges, county judges, statewide judges.
Other House members are starting to announce their intentions for next year.
- Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) will run for Treasurer and his House seat.
- Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh) will not seek reelection and run for Congress.
- Rep. Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) will not seek reelection and run for Congress.
- Rep. Paul Schemel (R-Adams) won’t seek reelection.
In 2024, the entire House and 25 members of the Senate (odd-numbered districts) are up for election.
