January 2024

Dear Neighbors,

Joyous Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed relaxing with family and friends during the holidays, I know I did (check out the photo below of holiday happiness). I was joined by 65+ residents on our First Day Hike at Pohick Bay Regional Park to start the year off on the right foot (or left, if you prefer)! Many thanks to Paul Gilbert and his team at NOVA Parks for making this such a success!

Please be sure to mark your calendars and join us for the 37th Annual Mount Vernon District Town Meeting on Saturday, February 10 (Super Bowl Saturday) at Mount Vernon High School (MVHS). This event is the highlight of our year as we greatly enjoy connecting with the 100’s of you who attend. The morning starts with the opening of the wildly popular Exhibit Hall at 7:45 a.m., featuring County and community services, local organizations and attractions, Young Entrepreneurs Expo and music by the MVHS String Quartet. At 9:30 a.m., our program will begin with special recognitions, community updates, Q & A’s with your local leaders and a virtual tour of all that is happening from Lorton to Huntington. Join us to find out more about why we are “The One”! Stay after the program to mingle with your neighbors at the Taste of Mount Vernon starting around 12:15 p.m., featuring many local restaurants.

Keep an eye out for our annual mailer, detailing TEAM MVD’s 2023 accomplishments, focus and investments for 2024, annual events and photo highlights from the year. Our goals for the coming year include: advocacy to increase state funding for schools, reducing large truck parking on our roadways, increasing housing options for all, beginning exterior construction on Original MVHS, launching a new MV business forum, completing the Lorton Visioning process and, (for fun!) opening Bunnyman Brewery at the Workhouse Arts Center. Be sure to check it out and let us know what you think!

Land Use

Virginia Adopts the 2021 Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC)

The updated administrative provisions included in the 2021 USBC will be effective on January 18. These administrative provisions amend the technical standards of the International Code Council’s building standards for use in Virginia. From January 18, 2024, until January 17, 2025, building permit applicants may choose to use the technical provisions of either the 2018 or 2021 USBC.

What does this mean for you? If you have any upcoming home improvement projects or new buildings that require building permits from Fairfax County Land Development Services (LDS), ensure that you are using the correct edition of the building code by following the guidelines. There is a one-year grace period between January 18, 2024, and January 17, 2025, wherein you can choose to either use the 2018 or the 2021 USBC provisions for your project. Learn more.

Important Safety Information

Code Compliance - Building Permits

A common violation found in Department of Code Compliance (DCC) investigations is construction taking place without required permits. DCC issues more Notices of Violation (NOVs) for construction without a permit than any other type of violation. The Virginia Construction Code (VCC) requires building permits for a wide range of projects. Many of these projects are very common property improvements. For example, decks on both commercial and residential buildings require a building permit. The same holds true for most wall installations and removals.

Homeowners, landlords and building managers alike may be unaware of building permit requirements, resulting in violations of the VCC and possible safety hazards, so it’s very important to learn when a building permit is required. Find out more information about permit requirements for various construction projects and installations.

If you have questions, want to make a report or if you are the subject of enforcement and need to contact DCC, you can report problems online, reach them via email, phone (703-324-1300 / TTY 711) or visit in person at 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 1016, Fairfax. Learn more.
