Dear Neighbors,

At yesterday's Board of Supervisor's meeting, I introduced our Youth Leadership Intern, Sarah Rivera Rivera. Sarah is a rising senior at South County HS and is interested in a career in public policy and law. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Fairfax County, Sarah is Vice-President of the local Social Studies Honor Society, has competed in regional and state level competition for DECA, is engaged in SOCO's softball team, enjoys running and going to the gym with her friends. She is very interested in the issues revolving underrepresented communities within the educational system. Welcome Sarah!

The Board approved County comments to be submitted to VDOT regarding the I-495 Southside Express Lanes Study. The study is examining a proposed 11-mile extension of the I495 Express Lanes from the Springfield Interchange (I-95/I-395/I-495), across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to the MD 210 interchange in Prince George’s County, MD. The County's comments incorporate the issues you and I advocated for, including addressing congestion issues on feeder roads in the North Gateway area and pedestrian and bicycle trails. Thank you to everyone who participated in this public engagement process to improve transportation and mobility in our area.
Other meeting highlights:
  • Recognized Cathy Ledec for her many years of service to our District, County and Mother Earth. Read more about Cathy in my previous newsletter...
  • Approved the installation of speed humps on Memorial Street as part of the Residential Traffic Administration Program (RTAP).
  • Approved land acquisition to construct crosswalk improvements at the intersection of Pole Road and Sacramento Drive.

We also recognized the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) for their 30 years of service to Northern Virginia. On this 30th Anniversary, we looked back on the challenges it took to get this new transit system up and running, as well as all that VRE has provided for our community and how much it has grown over the years. Like "The Little Engine that Could", the VRE continued to chug and chug up the hill and is now a thriving, viable transit option for thousands in our community.

Respectfully yours in public service,

Dan Storck

Public Hearings
Site-Specific Plan Amendment (SSPA) Process

Approved modifications to the Site-Specific Plan Amendment (SSPA) Process, following an extensive public engagement process. Modifications include:
  • Retention of the existing three-phase structure (nomination phase, screening phase, evaluation phase), while reducing the overall timeline of review through shorter nomination and screening phases with more flexible and targeted community engagement and a Planning Commission workshop in the screening phase (in lieu of task force meetings and formal Planning Commission hearings, respectively), and a more adaptable engagement model in the evaluation phase targeted to the needs of the specific proposed amendment.
  • Replacement of the current alternating reviews of the North and South County areas with a countywide nomination period every two years to provide more frequent opportunities for nominations to be submitted.
  • Changes to the submission requirements, as well as eligibility and justification criteria, to ensure that more areas of the County are eligible, that the information provided with the nominations can enhance stakeholder’s understanding of the proposals, and that the nominations that proceed to the evaluation phase are aligned with County goals.
  • Annual discussions will be held with the Planning Commission and Board to ensure the Comprehensive Plan Amendment Work Program is appropriately balanced to allow for broader planning priorities, such as countywide policy and area studies, as well as site-specific reviews.
The full item can be read on pages 339 - 358 of the Board Package.
