Youth at The Mountain
Message from Steph Anderson, Executive Director
It’s almost MountainCamp time!

We just finished our last Spring Con this weekend saying goodbye to a group of High School seniors. I was sad, but also proud, that we have this special place for our Youth to be who they are and grow into people we can be proud of.
We are already making plans for Fall Con’s and will hopefully be adding a Young Adult Con where they can continue at The Mountain to be a part of this family to make a difference in the world. Stay tuned for more on this!

We are gearing up for MountainCamp with camper spots filling up fast. See more below on open sessions to make sure your youth get to experience all that MountainCamp has to offer. Learn outdoor survival skills and backpack or spend time immersed in the Farm. These programs will have a lasting impact on our youth. You all asked for more options for your campers and you got it! Some sessions now will have some mixed ages so we will be adding more exciting programming to make camp even more fun!

We are now beginning the interview process for MountainCamp leadership plus lots of camp counselor positions. Please look to your 18+ young adults who will be the perfect fit to work at The Mountain. We need their institutional knowledge to continue our traditions and be a part of making new ones! This is a great opportunity for them to stay connected and keep our young kids engaged. What better way to spend your summer than working here! We also have some full time positions available too so check out the website under job opportunities.

To me, THIS is the most wonderful time of the year. Come join us for MountainCamp!

Message from the Board - Joy Irwin
I was a Con Advisor first, and a Mountain Board member second, and I still maintain that the most important thing The Mountain does is hold Youth Cons.

Growing up as a Unitarian Universalist in the South can be tricky.
It’s easy for our Youth to feel like they, their families, and even their fellowship youth groups are on a small island in a sea of people who see the world differently, and it’s easy to start wondering if it’s okay to see the world like they do. And then, as they age, the island gets even smaller, and the wondering gets even bigger.

If the feeling of awe can enlarge one’s horizons and give people a sense of place and of peace, then I say there is nothing better than the realization that Youth get when they come to a Mountain Con and see just how many other UUs there are in our region. It’s so powerful.

At a Mountain Con, our Youth are free to be themselves, in a group big enough to feel like their truths have legitimacy, and that their view of the world is useful, and okay, and necessary.

Generations of Youth have experienced this sense of awe, and I hope generations more will get the chance.

In peace and awe,
Joy Irwin
