Youth Spotlight & Difference Maker

Kids these days...

One of the first behavioral areas often associated with adolescents today is technology. As a parent of two Generation Alphas, I find that technological evolution and (over?)access to information provoke fear and spark ongoing negotiation in my home and car. When is it appropriate for my child to have their own device? How can I monitor the content they access? These are valid and personal considerations for each family. Locally, 27% of Eagle County parents report giving their child(ren) a tech device before age 10, while 43% provide a device between ages 10 and 14.

Communities That Care

November was a fun learning month for the coalition. We delved into the Social Development Strategy (SDS) workshop, learning how to support youth development and ways we can strengthen our connections with young people in our community.

The Social Development Strategy (SDS) fosters the success and health of young people from before birth through every stage of development. Providing young people with opportunities, skills and recognition strengthens bonding with family, school and community. Strong bonds motivate young people to adopt healthy standards for behavior.

Mountain Youth is now partnering with Move With Me Books!

Move With Me Books is a literary movement that engages readers through mindful movement, breath, and mindfulness

Move With Me Books (MWMB) is the holistic health approach to transform children’s literary experiences. They curate unique lesson plans that bring picture books to life through movement and breathing. MWMB aims to reach the visual learner by highlighting each illustration, the auditory learner by listening to the words of the story, the kinesthetic learner by moving along to the pictures, and the neurodivergent learner by providing options to look, listen, and move.

Their vision is for the next generation to feel peace.

Move With Me Books engages children to embody stories through movement and breath. It gives them tools to be mindful in an increasingly distracted world. Get your holiday wiggles out through the classic story- Twas the Night Before Christmas on our YouTube Channel.

You can also visit their website and check out their YouTube channel to see more!

You can also donate to them by mentioning MWMB when making a donation for CO Gives Day!

Parenting Tip of the Month

This month's parenting tip comes from The Thoughtful Parent Blog:

Have a pre-event debriefing

It may sound like you are part of an elite air force squadron, but this is just a fancy way of saying: set clear expectations. This doesn’t have to be all rules and regulations (although I usually include some of those), but the idea is to have a few minutes of calm before the big holiday event to sit down with your kids. During this sit-down, you can explain what’s going to happen at this event, the timeline (i.e., when are we opening presents!), who will be there, etc. Kids love routine and it helps them to know when something big is happening that is outside the normal routine. This also helps clarify any rules beforehand so there isn’t any confusion about expectations.

Example: Your family is going over to grandma’s house for Christmas dinner. You might explain to the kids who will be there, any big events that are happening and your expectations regarding dinner behavior, consumption of sweets, etc. This is also a good time to remind kids what happens when it’s time to leave or if there are any rules of the house they should be aware of.
