Your February ‘Youth Spotlight’ will be engaging the full spectrum of the term ‘youth’ as today we had the pleasure to sit down with two young adults in the valley to hear about their experience, growth, and development. Welcome to the February Young Adult Spotlight with Ivan Hu and Naia Montilla- two rad humans who came out to the valley some time ago and have found a home and community in their job and hobbies.

For this month’s Difference Maker, we interviewed Mountain Youth’s newest board member, Aaron Strietzel, Pastor at United Methodist Church in Eagle. Aaron, originally from Wisconsin and with ties to Durango, CO, moved with his family to Eagle in June 2023 to share his passion for spiritual growth and community involvement. A pastor since 2016, he focuses on building a supportive and welcoming environment, especially for youth.

We know the costs can be daunting for driver's education courses and we want to help our youth learn the rules of the road, build confidence behind the wheel, and pass their test. Curious what happened in the CTC world last month? Our coalition attended a Focus Group Workshop from the Communities Organizing for Prevention Evaluation Team to learn how to craft our own focus groups on the topic of Social Hosting. We are eager to put our learnings into action this spring. Keep an eye out for opportunities to join a focus group in May! We will hold separate focus groups for youth, parents/caregivers and law enforcement.

Cindy’s mission is to provide useful information to help college students feel at ease, worthy, and relevant as they attempt to find balance in their busy lives. She will explore:
Healthy Sexual Relationships - Consider choices that lead to consensual and respectful sexual relationships; sexual relevance and comfort require access to accurate information to understand communication and pleasure.
Online Influences - Become more discerning about the onslaught of messaging consumed through social media, Internet porn, online influencers, and marketing
Social Courage - Stretch one’s range of courage while navigating cultural pressures, confining gender expectations, and social norms, online and off.

Guiding Good Choices, a family learning series is back this spring. In five sessions, parents and caregivers learn specific actions that promote healthy development and reduce risky behavior in the teen years. Home practice and weekly family meetings build family connections and help families apply skills in real life. Guiding Good Choices emphasizes strong family bonds as the key that motivates preteens to follow family guidelines and stay on a course toward better health and educational outcomes as teenagers.
The English only session will take place March 18 - April 15 in Edwards.

Guiando Buenas Decisiones una serie de aprendizaje familiar, regresa esta primavera. En cinco sesiones, los padres y cuidadores aprenden acciones específicas que promueven un desarrollo saludable y reducen las conductas de riesgo en la adolescencia. La práctica en casa y las reuniones familiares semanales crean conexiones familiares y ayudan a las familias a aplicar habilidades en la vida real. Summer Day Camps
Location: Mountain Valley Horse Rescue in McCoy

Camp runs from June 10 - Aug 7
MVHR offers children 6 years old and up the opportunity to spend summer days with horses, with a variety of curricula. Day camps will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, throughout the summer. Kids learn all about horses, what it means to care for them and work with them on the ground. This camp is the perfect introduction to horses and a fun day spent outside at the ranch. (not a riding camp)

Walking Mountains Summer Science Camp Registration

Walking Mountains Summer Science Camps allow youth to experience the wild places of the Eagle River Valley while nurturing a connection to the natural world through daily excursions outside. Campers develop an understanding of scientific concepts through engaging activities, place-based learning, and exploration. All Summer Science Camps are taught by qualified natural science educators who make sure each camp is age-appropriate, unique, safe, and fun.

Teen Fitness Orientations
Location: Avon Recreation Center
Date: First class starts March 29 and runs every Saturday and Sunday until June 1st.
Time: Saturdays: 4:00 PM- 5:15 PM, Sundays 6:00 PM- 7:15 PM
This specialized class for teenagers ages 13-17 will allow for your child to gain access to the Avon Recreation Center’s weight room, cardio room, and TRX area.
This class will focus on weight room safety and injury prevention. Children will be taught safe and effective lifting techniques through education of proper lifting form, proper utilization of the weightlifting machines we offer, and fundamental lifting techniques to help your child approach free-weight strength training as well as fitness program development.
Upon completion of the class, your child will have access to the entirety of the Avon Recreation Center’s upstairs area, allowing them to progress further in their sport, minimize injury, and increase overall health and longevity.
