It is with profound sadness that we share the news that Dr. and Prof. Abdulaziz A. Sachedina, a towering scholar of Islamic thought and a cherished friend of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID), passed away yesterday. Dr. Sachedina served as Chair of the CSID Board of Directors from 2005 to 2010, guiding our organization through crucial years of growth and helping to shape our mission to promote democracy, human rights, and pluralism in the Muslim world. His wisdom, integrity, and unwavering moral courage left a deep imprint on all who had the privilege to work with him.

Dr. Sachedina was not only an eminent academic, but also a pioneer in articulating a powerful Islamic basis for human dignity, democratic pluralism, and peaceful coexistence between Muslims, Christians, Jews, and people of all faiths and none. Through his teaching, writing, and public engagement, he inspired generations of students, scholars, and activists to see Islam as a faith that embraces justice, compassion, and respect for difference. At CSID, he was a source of constant encouragement, a voice of conscience, and a living example of how scholarship and faith can serve the common good. He led our three major conferences on Islam, Shariah, and Democracy in Sudan, Iran and Nigeria, between 2004 and 2006. which gathered over 400 Muslim religious leaders from all over the world.

On behalf of CSID’s Board of Directors, staff, and members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Sachedina’s family, colleagues, students, and all who mourn his passing around the world. We pray that God grants him mercy, forgiveness, and the highest place in Paradise, and that his family and loved ones find comfort in the knowledge that his life’s work will continue to bear fruit for many years to come. May his memory be a blessing and a source of renewed commitment to the values he championed: faith, freedom, and human dignity for all.
