Get Moving This Winter CHQ

Winter is here! Staying active through the winter and cold months benefits the body and mind. Our area has so much to offer to keep us healthy and fit. Looking for fresh air experiences and wanting to improve strength, balance, and cardiorespiratory health? Then outdoor winter activities are for you. In the winter we can all benefit from moving through the snow on varied terrain, working on our balance (which recruits all those wonderful core muscles- another plus) and getting our heart rate up!

What are some other positives about winter outdoor activities? The list is long and includes boosted mood, helps the winter blues, helps maintain and improves fitness, reduces stress and helps you relax, Vitamin D absorption, and creating connection with nature and community. Fresh air is good for the body and soul. The first step is just getting out there! See the links below for fun opportunities to move this winter.

Type II Diabetes on the Rise in Youth

According to the CDC, type 2 diabetes is a growing problem among our youth. Until recent years diabetes 2 rarely affected children and teens. However, many of our youth are now overweight (about one third) and have developed diabetes as young as 10 years old. What can we do? Adding more physical activity into school and family life can lower the risk as it helps the body use insulin better.

Until recently, young children and teens almost never got Type II Diabetes, which is why it used to be called adult-onset diabetes. Now, about one-third of American youth are overweight, a problem closely related to the increase in kids with type 2 diabetes, some as young as 10 years old. Age matters and affects teens more during puberty as hormones make it harder for the body to regulate insulin, especially for girls.

There are other risk factors that can affect children as well such as: having a diabetic family member, born to a mother who had gestational diabetes, being African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American. Alaska Native, Asian American, Pacific Islander and having one or more conditions that are related to insulin resistance. If a child is overweight and has other risk factors it is recommended to speak with a physician.

Buzz on Pickleball

Now that the cold weather has moved in, many will move their love of pickleball indoors. Does everyone play this game? If you have not tried it here are the basics: Pickleball is a blend of tennis, ping pong and badminton, it has simple rules and is played with special paddles and a softer/not so bouncy ball. More here: Official Pickleball Rules (Explained Simply!) (pickleballrush.com)

Pickleball involves many muscle groups and skills and like any other sport, players should warm up, and practice all skills and movements and to prevent overuse injuries from repetitive motions. One way to do this is to make sure you are doing other forms of physical activity and working on your range of motion, flexibility and strength. Agility and balance are also key components to work on to prevent injuries and enjoy your game! Pickleball is a great all over body exercise utilizing lateral movements of the lower body, core, upper body. Have fun playing and remember to move many ways throughout your week.
