The bittersweetness of the season. Feeling a little empty. Many snowbirders are dispersing for summer. We have hiked and walked together. Sat through bad movies or volunteered around town. We laughed and talked and saved the world on various committees, and now you have gone or must go, and my world has lost some of its color. But there is also a sweetness in this time of reflection. Flat out gratitude that I live in this community and get to spend time in the company of splendid women. I realize many lesbians don't get those days of easy company and moving freely in their communities. A season of mixed emotions; part of me is looking forward to the quieter, slower days and longer conversations with those still in town while grieving the absence of others. It's a good place to be, a reminder not to take those around me for granted. A reminder that the richness of my life flows from others.

I wish you community this week, no matter where you may be.

When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety; if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain. From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me. There is a great secret here for anyone who can grasp it.

Women’s History

Women, We Should Know

Perpetua and Felicity are 3rd-century North African paired saints who were executed together for their Christian faith. Some consider them lesbian saints or patrons of same-sex couples. Transgender people also draw inspiration from Perpetua because she had a queer vision of being transformed into a man. They were arrested for being Christian, imprisoned together, and kissed each other in the last moments before they were both put to death in the the so-called “games” of public arena in Carthage on March 7, 203.

The details of their imprisonment are known because Perpetua kept a journal, which is considered the first known written document by a woman in Christian history and one of the only known texts by a woman in the whole ancient world.

The Wedding Banquet at 11:00am with Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang

From Director Andrew Ahn comes a joyful comedy of errors about a chosen family navigating the disasters and delights of family expectations, queerness, and cultural identity. Angela and her partner Lee have been unlucky with their IVF treatments, but can't afford to pay for another round. Meanwhile their friend Min, the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa. When his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris rejects his proposal, Min makes the offer to Angela instead: a green card marriage in exchange for funding Lee's IVF. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min's skeptical grandmother flies in from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza.

This Week's Recommendation

North of North on Netflix

Welcome to Ice Cove, Nunavut, the charming Arctic setting where the new comedy series North of North unfolds amid stunning landscapes and within a tight-knit community. Netflix’s first Canadian original series follows Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman who wants to build a new future for herself after a spontaneous — and extremely public — exit from her marriage. But it won’t be easy in a place like this, where everybody knows your business.
